What Are You Planning For The Next Four Years?
Well, this may sound a bit too serious, but you should know that it is very important to begin to decide how to go about finishing that degree and NOT wasting time on courses, which do not apply to the degree. Of course, sometimes you take a course just because you want to and not worry about it counting on a degree, but that should be a choice-NOT AN ACCIDENT!
Also, a number of very interesting minors exist at this university. A minor typically requires 15 credit hours to complete, BUT the exciting thing is that in many cases, with advanced planning you can use some of your humanities, social sciences, and other courses that are part of your degree to satisfy requirements in the minor. You can do this by knowing what the minor requires and then selecting courses that will "double" count in your degree and the minor as well. A listing of these minors can be found in the NCSU Handbook for Advising and Teaching
Two Important Considerations When Planning Your Schedule Each Semester
- You must have the prerequisites for the courses before you enroll. Sometimes there are corequisites as well. You can check the Course Catalog to determine what the prerequisites for a course all AND if there are any minimum grades associated with the prerequisites. This Catalog is online and can be viewed by clicking http://www.ncsu.edu/registrar/ and looking under Course Descriptions.
- You must also know if a course is offered each semester or not as well as in summer school. YOU NEED TO KNOW THAT A NUMBER OF UPPER LEVEL COURSES ARE ONLY OFFERED ONCE A YEAR. You must consider the consequence of this if a course only offered in the Fall is a prerequisite for one in the Spring. Well, if you should not take it in the Fall (or we won't discuss the chance of not passing it in the Fall), then you would be the next fall before you could take the course. The fall or spring only courses should only be a consideration in courses involved in your major. The general education courses like humanities, social sciences, maths, etc. are usually available year round including summers. WHEN IN DOUBT, check with the department or college wherein the course is taught. Use you email to ask them.
We are providing the most accurate listing of when textiles courses are taught as can be determined at this time. You should always go to the respective department to check, if necessary.
TATM - Textile Apparel and Technology Management
Room 3243
This is where you would check for all courses with the prefixes TAM, TT and some T's.
TECS - Textile Engineering Science and Chemistry
Room 3251
This is where you check for all courses with the prefixes PCC, TMS, TE, TES, and some T's.
These two considerations are VITAL to
graduating on time as is doing well in your classes.
You should prepare a four year plan (more or less, if necessary) in an
Excel spreadsheet or word processor file for your intended major at this
time. If you are still not totally sure, prepare it for the one that
you feel the strongest possibility. If you change degrees, the plan can
be easily modified. You should definitely keep this plan and expect advisers
to require it when you meet with them.
Format: Your plan should contain the following information presented in the following style.
- Your Name
- Social Security Number
- Local Address
- Local Phone
- Intended Major
- Considering a Minor? If yes, which one?
- Credits for AP courses, courses taken at a community college or other college while in high school, etc. Please list these. Also click on the following to see current information about AP credits and other means of obtaining credits at NC State.

First Year Courses
Fall Semester: List the courses you are currently taking in a numbered list. You only need to provide the abbreviation for the course and the course number.
- MA 111
- ENG 111
- PE 237
- and so on listing all your courses.
Spring Semester: List the courses you plan to take and place beside the course in parentheses any prerequisite that is needed and if a certain grade in that prerequisite is required, include the grade.
For any course taught in the College of Textiles, place F for fall, S for spring, and SS for summer school to show when they are taught.
- MA 141 (MA 111 with a C or better or the equivalent)
- PCC 203 (Chemistry 101, F,S,S,S)
- and so on listing all your courses.
Second Year Courses
Continue doing the same thing as discussed above. You will receive help from the "ideal" 4-year plan that is part of the degree information provided with the curriculum guides for each textile major. You should always schedule at least 15-17 hours per semester.
YOU ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP AN "ACADEMIC FILE/PORTFOLIO" THAT WILL BE WITH YOU EVERY TIME YOU MEET WITH AN ADVISOR ABOUT ACADEMIC ISSUES.
