Communication  Instructor/Student

The success of the distance education course is closely tied to the quality of communication between the student and the instructor. Students are encouraged to communicate directly with their course professor frequently.

Coordinator

Each student provides a coordinator contact whose responsibilities include: receiving and returning all course viewing materials; distributing homework and handouts; and supervising quizzes and examinations in accordance with professor’s schedule. Only students registered in a course may view course materials. The coordinator will agree to make every reasonable precaution to protect the integrity of all exams and quizzes. Failure to comply could result in academic penalties to the registrant and/or cancellation of the course. A photocopy of all completed quizzes and exams should be retained for the student’s records before mailing the completed work to the professor.

Guidelines for selecting a Coordinator

You will need to provide the name and mailing address of someone who will serve as your "Coordinator". Your Coordinator must be someone who can fill the role objectively.

The criteria for selecting and approving an individual to serve in this role are as follows:

  1. A Coordinator can be a manager, supervisor, human relations employee, librarian or faculty member at NCSU or at another institution.

  2. Your Coordinator should have a separate mailing address than your personal address.

  3. Your coordinator cannot be another student enrolled at NCSU as an on-campus or distance education student, a friend or family member, or someone who reports directly to you in your work position.

The Coordinator will be responsible for adhering to the exam policies concerning length of the exam and materials that can be brought into the exam location, such as textbooks, notes, papers, calculators, laptop computers, etc. It will be the Coordinator's responsibility to return the exam as instructed by the course professor.

Costs

Costs to the student include tuition, textbooks, reference materials, return shipping, and telephone expense.

A course outline is available upon request by contacting the program assistant for TOP if you are considering which course(s) to take. Extension Requests

Permission to retain tapes and/or extend the time for course completion must be approved by the course professor. Written authorization from the instructor should be provided to the TOP Director or program assistant.
