ENGLISH - Your Choices

ENGLISH 101 This is a 4 credit course. That is important to remember.

You DO NOT have to take ENG 101 in the fall. This is the only course that has been scheduled for some of you already. Half of you have been placed in ENG 101, but you may not be.

Follow this set of questions.

  1. If you have ENG 101 and don't want to take it in the fall, you can drop it. BUT if you do you will not be able to add it back. There are NO more seats open in the English 101 classes except the ones that some of you may drop. You can wait to take ENG 101 in the spring. You could even wait as long as the Fall of 2009 but that would be the absolute latest.

  2. How do I know if I need to/am eligible to take ENG 101? You need to check this site for that information.

  3. NO AP or IB SCORES

  4. If you are not going to have AP or IB scores for English, you must follow the SAT verbal score to determine if you take ENG 101 (480 verbal or higher) or ENG 100 (470 or lower). If you place in ENG 100 which is a 4 credit course, you will still take ENG 101 after that. This would be 8 semester credits of English.

NOTE: If you do place in ENG 100, you have another choice. You can take ENG 100 OR you can take English at a community college or any other 4 year school in the summer. The difference is that all English courses in community colleges and most other 4 year schools are only 3 credits. If you check the following website, you will see that you would be required to take 2 English courses to get credit for ENG 101. However, if you are placed in ENG 100, you will take 8 credits so taking 2 courses at a community college would be less. You could take one each summer for 2 years. A lot of community colleges are offering these on line now. You would need to check for yourself and decide for yourself.

  5. I do have or am expecting AP or IB SCORES.

You will not have your senior year AP or IB scores of course. Many of you will have AP or IB scores from your previous high school years. My advice about what you should do is simple. If you know you don't have a decent chance of placing out or doing the portfolio, stay in ENG 101 if you have it in your schedule and want to take it in the fall.

If you think you have a good chance to place out or score high enough to submit a portfolio, drop it and wait to see. You can always add ENG 101 in the spring if you need to.

    About the portfolio...

As soon as you know you are eligible to submit a portfolio, start working on it!!!

  6. I took special English classes in high school that are part of a community college program. What do I need to do?

If you took two and made at least a C- in each, you are finished with ENG 101 at NCSU. You'll need to have a transcript sent to the Admissions Office immediately.
