NO DEGREE in Textiles REQUIRES a Foreign Language, BUT..
If you did not meet the high school foreign language proficiency requirement, you will need to take courses now in order to do that. All the information you need about this may be found at http://sasw.chass.ncsu.edu/fl/place.htm .
We STRONGLY encourage students to study languages. We currently offer a Spanish and French major as well as minors, http://www.ncsu.edu/advising_central/minors.html , in several languages at NCSU. It is remarkably easy to double in a language and any textile degree. We will discuss this at length in T 101.
Why would I want to take any more language if it is not required? The best question here is really why would I NOT want to take more. Knowing another language and studying abroad in another culture are just simply an important part of your experiences as a developing young professional. Also, many of the courses that are in language majors and minors also fulfill requirements in your textile degree so in effect, these courses count "twice". You will learn about that in T 101.

What if I want to take a language my first semester? If you have AP scores, you can use that to help you decide what to take. Most of you will NOT have AP language scores. The process of deciding which language to take involves taking a placement test at NCSU. You will take the NCSU placement test at orientation. We can change or add a language then if you wish.
The introductory levels, 101 and 102, of a language do NOT count in any degree or minor at NCSU. You do NOT take these courses just to add credits to your schedule.
REMEMBER, you are NOT required to take a foreign language for any textile degree UNLESS you did not meet the high school proficiency.
