Early Registration - Humanities & SS

Humanities and Social Science Requirements

NC State requires that all students, no matter the major, meet specific requirements in different areas of study. These different requirements are called the General Education Requirements or GERs. One area of specific courses is the Humanities and Social Sciences Requirements. In many degrees, the college you are in has made some choices as to what you must take to fulfill the requirement for the degree. READ this carefully.

The categories of Humanities and Social Science you must meet are as follows. OR means just that. You get to choose either one type of course or the other. In bold print are special requirements by the College of Textiles for that Category.

Category 1 . Visual and Performing Arts OR History TE requires GC 120 here. One 3 credit course
Category 2 . Literature One 3 credit course
Category 3 . Philosophy OR Religion OR History One 3 credit course

Category 4. Social Science Two courses from different content areas, in the study of psychology, economics, politics and government, sociology, anthropology and cultural geography. (6 hours).

FTM requires EC 201 or ARE 201 (both equal in content) and EC 202 for both of these. Students prefer ARE 201. TT requires EC 205 for one of these. TE requires an economics course and will accept any one of these: ARE 201, EC 201, EC 202, or EC 205.

Two 3 credit courses
Category 5 . Science Technology Society (STS) This category is definitely more unique than the others and usually courses to meet this are only found at NC State. One 3 credit course
Category 6 . Any Humanities or Social Science Here a FTM major would NOT take an EC course. One 3 credit course

Category 7 . One of the 7 courses must be selected to met a requirement called the "non-English culture" requirement which means the course must focus on some culture that does NOT speak English. This DOES NOT mean the course is taught in a language other than English. NOTE: Foreign language courses from level 201 and higher meet this requirement as well.

T 101 will teach you more about these requirements, BUT I find that the humanities and social sciences are the most courses students most often make mistakes with.

Courses to Consider by Possible Degree

MAJOR NOTE TO ALL STUDENTS: DO NOT take 300 or higher level courses your first semester in any humanities or social science. WAIT at least one semester or one year.

Recommendations for the fall:

For the first semester, we ask you to choose from the following:

  1. Try any ONE of these. You would be better to only take one of these until you are more certain of the degree you want. ARE 201, MUS 180, MUS 200, PSY 200, SOC 202, 203, 204 or 205, IDS 201, ANT 252, PS 201, or GEO 220. Note: Be careful about PSY 200. All are large classes of at least 200 students. Remember: If you can find any of these as "Q" classes, use them in your schedule if at all possible.

  2. Try any 200 level history course.

FTM - A good course for all FTM majors is ARE 201.

TEU - ARE 201 is highly recommended for you also.
