Summer Assignments

NOTE: All assignments are to be double spaced in Times New Roman 12 point font.

  1. SUMMER READING:
    Who Moved My Cheese
    by Spencer Johnson

To get ahead in a class, you can write a one page summary of how reading Who Moved My Cheese relates to your coming to college and then another one page summary of how you could see applying the concepts in this book to any company. This means 2 separate one page summaries would need to be written. The one page is the minimum and maximum amount allowed. Place your name on the top left justified with the left side of the paper. These two assignments will be collected close to the beginning of the semester. You will be told when to bring them to class.

  2. Personal Information - This is to be an attachment to an email.

This needs to be prepared as a word document, either .doc or docx. Make the information fit on one page and use nothing smaller than 10 font, preferably Times New Roman.
At the top of the word document justified on the left margin, put your last name, followed by a comma, and then the rest of your legal name. Under that, put the name you wish to be called. Do this in all caps and bold.

Immediately under your name, please insert a picture of you that is not larger than 2 or 3 inches long. This picture can be of you just hanging out.....please do not feel like you need to send me your high school senior picture!! As long as I can see you, that's fine. If there are other people in the picture, just make sure I know which one you are. Feel free to use the wrap text function in word to move your answer up beside your picture.

Then answer the following questions. The answers may be lists that are numbered or bulleted. Complete sentences are NOT required.

Use the highlighted part of each bulleted section in what you write so we will know where your answer is for that section.

    • a. Who are the members of your family "unit"? List the names including the last name of the members of the "family" unit you just left to come to school here. Include the people with whom you were living and their relationship to you. Also include other individuals who are a major part of your "family" unit but may not live with you such as grandparents, a parent who does not live with you, etc. Just provide their name including last names and kin or relationship such as step brother, etc. If you are married, please include the name of your spouse and any children.

    • b. Things I Do. Provide a list of things you can do and start with those you are best at and/or enjoy most. Include on this list anything you'd like such as riding horses, carving wood figures, playing classical guitar, whatever!! But remember to prioritize with those you do best and/or enjoy most at the top. Be sure to indicate beside the activities at the top, say the first 4 or 5 at least, whether you are good at it, just enjoy it and not really good at it, or both!! Actually put numbers beside these on your list.

    • c. What is important to me and why? Take a few minutes and just write down all the kinds of activities in which you have been involved both in and out of school ex. 4-H, church, sports, Scouts, band, art competitions, photography, volunteer work, etc etc etc….as this list could be endless. Then make a list of 5 of these that are most significant to you and something that you experienced in these 5 activities. These statements should be brief…no more than 2 sentences or so for each of the meaningful activities.

    • d. A Good Friend Would Say - On of your good friends is going to tell me why I should be glad you are in my class. List 5-7 things s/he would tell me again in order of what they would say first and then go from there.

    • e. Memorable Event - Describe an event that has taken place in your life and had a major impact. Tell me why.

    • f. Why did you choose the College of Textiles? Be completely honest.

    • g. Parent Email Addresses - I send a newsletter to parents and anyone you think would like to know what is happening in the college. This is general information and is certainly not about you personally. I need current and correct email addresses and please tell me the name of the person that goes with the email.

  3. Personal Planner Requirement

One of the two required books for T101 is a personal planner that meets my exact requirements. I will accept no other type of planner, so do not email and ask me if I will. This planner is the type called Daily Minder or Week At a Glance. These are for sale at stores like Office Max or Staples. You can see one at www.ataglance.com. The planner must be this large size planner that displays the entire week when open. Each day must have 15 or 30 minute intervals for scheduling.

Contact Philip Dail or Teresa Langley with any questions.
Email is strongly encouraged and preferred.
