COLLEGE OF TEXTILES BEGINS COLLABORATIVE INITIATIVES ON WEB
The Collaborative Initiatives series is planned by the College of Textiles with a simple, yet important purpose: To bring together all those involved in a particular area of textiles to create more opportunities and help them work more effectively. In this era of increased global competition, it is critical that all involved - researchers, educators, organizations, support industries - share expertise and focus on the issues that will make the biggest impact.

In order to connect and involve as many people as possible, the latest communication technologies will be used to create these "virtual" centers. The college will provide the leadership and the organizational effort to bring these initiatives to a self-sustaining level.

The website for the initiative is still developing, but to learn more and to see the website visit http://www.tx.ncsu.edu/textiles_frame.cfm?destination=/ci/. Please check back often due to the many updates being performed.

ANNUAL FUND
Who’s Calling
By Lenora Kraft, Associate Director of the Annual Fund
It may have happened to you: the phone rings, and a cheerful voice says, Hi, this is Jessica and I’m calling from the NC State Annual Fund.... You think, Wait a minute, didn’t I just write a check to NC State? Well, maybe you did. And you’re not alone in being confused, so here’s a quick checklist of who may be contacting you from NC State, and why.

The NC State Annual Fund
Jessica is an NC State student who works three or four nights each week at the Annual Fund, calling alums like you to ask you to make a gift to the university. As a Textiles grad, you’ll be asked to make a gift to the Annual Fund for Textiles, and if you say yes (and we hope you do!), you’ll be given the option of charging your gift on the spot to your MasterCard or Visa, or receiving a pledge confirmation in the mail a couple of days later. (You can also beat Jessica to the punch by going to the Annual Fund website at www.ncsu.edu/annualfund B to make a gift online.)
The reason for the call is simple: though NC State is state-supported, there’s never enough money in the state's budget to fund all the university’s needs. That's where private support comes in. Last year NC State supporters pitched in more than $1.7 million to underwrite scholarships and fellowships, computer and laboratory upgrades, and teaching and research awards, plus library essentials and alumni functions. The Annual Fund also assists in raising money for special projects like the Senior Class Gift and the Parents’ Fund.
Two further notes, in case Jessica forgets to mention it: a gift to the university through the Annual Fund is 100% tax-deductible. And if you don’t already know, it’s worth finding out if you work for a matching gift company. Some businesses will match an employee’s gift dollar-for-dollar (or more), turning your $500 gift into $1,000 for NC State’s academic priorities. Now aren’t you glad you answered the phone?

The NC State Alumni Association
Chances are that if the check you remember writing was for $40, it was for your Alumni Association dues. The Alumni Association organizes reunions and tailgates, sponsors local club events, publishes an award-winning quarterly magazine, and offers its members access to a wide range of goods and services, from travel opportunities to insurance, car rentals, and theater tickets often at a sizeable discount. Local alumni clubs provide a sense of community for alums who are far from home, not to mention to get together on game day and cheer on the Wolfpack!

The NC State Student Aid Association
The NC State Student Aid Association, better known as the Wolfpack Club, is another organization on campus that asks for the support of alums. Contributions to the Wolfpack Club fund scholarships for student athletes, some 8,000 since its founding in 1936. The Wolfpack Club now supports 21 varsity sports, from well-known ones like football and basketball to the no-less-important golf, track, swimming, and women’s soccer, to name only a few. The Wolfpack Club is made up of over 12,000 generous donors whose contributions range from $100 to over $18,000 annually. Members receive priority ticket privileges, invitations to special events, and most importantly, the gratification of giving to student-athletes the opportunity to attend and earn a degree from NC State.

So that’s who’s calling...now aren’t you glad
