TOTE Program Expanding By Teresa Langley, Tote Program Director The NC State University Textile Off-campus Televised Education (TOTE) program is a distance education program designed to provide textile undergraduate and graduate courses to any individual seeking an improved textiles education or background (credit or audit). The present delivery system is predominantly video tape, but the College wants to be the leader in global textile education within the next five years. To that end, it is expanding the program to include offerings via CD-ROM and the World Wide Web. Certification and masters degrees in textiles can be obtained via TOTE without a residence requirement. Over the past year and a half, the College of Textiles has made huge strides towards building a comprehensive library of streaming lecture content. The creation of a studio specifically for this purpose over the summer of 2001 is archiving multiple classes daily. Eric Kepnew, a TOTE graduate and now a Process Engineer with Berkeley Mills had the following the say about the program, It offered me a chance to take some structured, graduate level polymer and chemistry classes, and have them count towards an advanced degree. Working full time as an engineer in a manufacturing environment, I would never have been able to complete such a degree without the flexibility the program offered. Being off-campus was never an issue, the professors maintained office hours and were always very responsive to phone calls or internet requests for help. The TOTE program was a great way for me to complete my educational goals. In addition Adam Varley, another TOTE graduate stated, I was able to hone my skills in areas of technology that I had not previously been exposed to in depth, while continuing my career in New York.
