RESEARCH CENTER OPENS NEW NONWOVENS LAB

The Nonwovens Cooperative Research Center's (NCRC) Partners Lab at the North Carolina State University College of Textiles has opened. The new $12 million facility is the most comprehensive nonwoven-textiles lab in the world.

This new high-tech lab specializes in two state-of-the-art processes: melt spinning and hydroentangling. In melt spinning, thermoplastic polymers are heated and extruded, then cooled to create fabrics. Hydroentangling uses water jets that press fibers into knotted webs that don't need bonding materials.

DEAN GODFREY: NEW WORLD OF TEXTILES NEEDED
Editor's Note: The following is Dean Blan Godfrey's speech at the Multi-State Textile Summit at Gaston College in Dallas, NC, on March 22, 2002.

I would like to make three points today: First, we need to support our current textile companies so they can compete, they can continue to provide jobs and drive the economy and they can survive to fight another day. Secondly, we need to seize the current national initiatives. Our government is going to invest billions of dollars in the next few years in national security. Much of this investment is textile related and we must assure that we get the appropriate share for the nation's leading textile-producing region. And last, we need to create the future, build the "New World of Textiles."

TEXTILE INDUSTRY LIKES NC VOICE
by Tony Mecia, Charlotte Observer
WASHINGTON - The textile industry is applauding the appointment of a native North Carolinian to the top textile post in the U.S. Department of Commerce.
President Bush named Jim Leonard, a 34-year veteran of Burlington Industries, the department's deputy assistant secretary for textiles, apparel and consumer goods last month.
Leonard, 62, oversees about 45 workers who monitor international trade. Staffers follow quota allotments and international shipments of textile and apparel, as well as other goods, including tobacco and shoes.

The May 2002 Graduating Class
MAY 2002 GRADUATION CLOUDED BY WEAK ECONOMY
One Hundred Ten optimistic undergraduates and fourteen graduate students walked across the stage to receive their diplomas on Saturday, May 18, 2002. The sky was gray and threatened rain throughout the ceremony, which may have been ironic symbolism for the economic climate in to which these graduates were entering. Many career services professionals branded this year as the worst placement year since the great depression. TEXTILE ENGINEERING SOCIETY HOLDS END OF THE YEAR EVENT
Textile Engineering faculty, staff, alumni, students, and parents braved a cold spring rain to attend the 2002 End of the Year event hosted by the Textile Engineering Society (TES) on Saturday, May 4th.
Held annually, the event is hosted to bring all those involved in the Textile Engineering program together for a final celebration of the year's activities, as well as to provide a little relief before the stressful exam period begins. Officers and members of TES also used the event to recognize out-going and new officers, as well as the senior award winners.

You see, Darryl is heading to Houston, Texas in mid-June to start training for Teach for America.

So what is Teach for America?  Teach for America is paid for through AmeriCorps, which works with nonprofit agencies, faith-based groups, school and other organizations to provide opportunities for Americans to serve their communities in education, children and youth, community development, public health, hunger and homelessness projects.  Darryl will be a full time paid teacher in a urban or rural public school for two years starting this fall.  Teach for America looks for recent college graduates in all academic backgrounds that are interested in helping children of our nation gain the opportunities they deserve.

GRADUATING TEXTILE ENGINEERING STUDENT LEARNS LIFE'S A JOURNEY NOT A GOAL
The year was 1996 when a 17 year old student from Western Guilford High School in Greensboro, NC attended the Summer Textile Exploration Program. He realized that summer the College of Textiles could give him the education he needed to go on to a higher education after his undergraduate degree was earned. Through the STEP program he saw how much the industry's technology had changed in the last twenty years and he knew that more advanced technology would be needed in the future.
