LEADERSHIP INITIATIVE LAUNCHED

Chancellor Marye Anne Fox and Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. H. Hugh Shelton (pictured left) on January 14, 2002 announced that he will return to the university as executive director of the newly created Gen. Henry Hugh Shelton Initiative for Leadership Development at NC State.

As the initiative's executive director as well as a Senior Leadership Fellow, Shelton, an NC State textiles alumnus, will return to the university's campus several times during the coming year to promote leadership development in a variety of ways, including hosting workshops and motivational seminars for honors students. He will direct the Shelton Leadership Seminar Series, which twice a year will bring, recognized leaders to interact with the university community. He also will act as technical adviser on faculty research projects that have military science components.

NC STATE FABRIC RESEARCHERS DEVELOP NEW TECHNIQUES

Permanent press shirts. Flame retardant sleepwear for children. Stain-resistant furniture fabrics. We take for granted all of these products and the textile technology that made them possible. These convenient and safe products come at a price, however. The wet fabric finishing processes used to create them produce polluting effluents and consume large amounts of energy in the drying process.

TEXTILE OPEN HOUSE BRINGS HUNDREDS TO THE COLLEGE OF TEXTILES
With nothing but bad news surrounding the textile industry, why would over 800 students, parents and guest spend a beautiful Saturday at the College of Textiles? The reason was Textile Open House, which was held on Saturday, February 9th.

In what has become a tradition, Textile Open House is the only major public relations and recruiting event for the College of Textiles and Centennial Campus. Used primarily for attracting potential students and their parents to the campus, the event utilized about one hundred and fifty faculty, staff and students doing everything from greeting visitors and providing tours to performing demonstrations and talking with parents.

Because of the tremendous changes in and bad publicity about the textile industry, this event was used as a barometer to gauge the mood of prospective students and the general public. The results were surprisingly positive.

RETIRED FACULTY AND STAFF HONORED
On January 18th, the College of Textiles retired faculty and staff (pictured left) gathered at the college for a luncheon to honor their many years of service and dedication the college. It proved to be a wonderful opportunity for them to see old friends, reminisce, and catch up with each other. The two-hour luncheon featured Dean Blanton Godfrey speaking about "The New World of Textiles" and what the college is doing to prepare students for this world that they will be stepping into upon graduation. A lot has changed since some of these faculty and staff were working here at the college. So it was a breath of fresh air for them to hear how we are changing with the industry. They learned about our involvement in medical textiles, nonwovens, nano-technologies, new dyeing processes and how we are connecting ourselves with many companies that the public wouldn't even think are textile related industries, but they are.

This is a first event of this kind for retired faculty and staff, but we do not see it being the last one. The luncheon was such a success that The College of Textiles and the North Carolina Textile Foundation have decided to make it an annual event.

CENTENNIAL SCHOLARS WEEKEND
On January 25th and 26th forty-three high school seniors that had been selected through an in depth application process came to the College of Textiles for interviews for Centennial Scholarships. On Friday evening a dinner was held to honor the sponsors and recipients of the current Centennial Scholars and it served as a welcoming to the students interviewing the next day and their parents. Pictured to the left is Chancellor Marye Anne Fox, Charles Little, President of the NC Textile Foundation, and the current students that the NCTF sponsors for a Centennial Scholarship. Saturday was filled with interviews for the students and as in the past the weekend was very successful for the college. Please look for more information about our new Centennial Scholars in upcoming issues.

DISTANCE EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH OFFERS DISTANCE LEARNING TO THE TEXTILE INDUSTRY
Extension and Applied Research at the College of Textiles has long been the leader in providing onsite textile education classes for the textile industry. These classes are part of the In-plant Education Program which assesses the training needs of a company and then customizes the instruction in order to focus on the company's specific materials, processes and products. Now such instruction can be computer-based and be delivered on CD to companies or to individuals. The first such Distance Learning offering is the very popular Textile Fundamentals course which historically has been offered as part of the Professional Development Program or taught as an in-plant class. The CD-based instruction encompasses a video presentation by the lecturer with synchronized graphics, animations, texts, and video to enhance the knowledge transfer. Textile Fundamentals Distance Learning contains 13 different training modules totaling 26 hours of instruction with topics ranging from textile fibers all the way to dyeing and finishing.

UTILIZING CURRENT STUDENTS TO INTRODUCE NEW STUDENTS TO THE INTERNSHIP PROCESS
Other than free pizza, what brings out freshmen, sophomores and juniors to a non-mandatory, after-hours event on a cold and rainy Tuesday night? The annual Summer Job Forum at NC State's College of Textiles that's what!

What is the Summer Job Forum you ask? Well, it is a sister event to the Real World Forum (held each fall with young alumni as panelists) except this event targets new and underclass students. The purpose of this event is to introduce all students, but especially underclassmen, to the internship process, the importance of summer work experience, and the advantages of work experience in the entry-level permanent job search.

GIFTS TO THE COLLEGE
With everyone's budget being squeezed, the College of Textiles is very fortunate to have corporate partners who are still willing to donate much-needed items to the College. Three companies in recent months have made significant contributions to the College of Textiles. In each case, students are the beneficiaries of the gifts. Student-oriented atmosphere, resources for successful students, and generous corporate partners have long been attributes that make the College of Textiles unique.

National Textiles recently donated nearly 1,200 printed, long-sleeve T-shirts to the college for use in our recruiting efforts. This is the third year straight that National Textiles has made such a generous donation. In addition to being distributed to high school students who attended Textile Open House, the T-shirts are also given to high school teachers and counselors who allow the College to recruit in their schools and classrooms. As an added bonus, National Textiles also sponsors two Centennial Scholarships for top Textile students.

Omnova Solutions, based in Fairlawn, OH, has recently partnered with the College of Textiles for the purposes of recruiting potential employees and conducting joint research. As is the custom of Omnova, to initiate the partnership, a check in the amount of $15,000 was granted to the College of Textiles. Pictured to the the left are Kim Houchens and Drew Parsons presenting the check to Kent Hester. The fund will be used for student support in a variety of ways. Possible uses include undergraduate scholarship support, graduate scholarship support, as well as both graduate and undergraduate research opportunities. The College depends upon these types of loosely restricted gifts to provide above-average support to our students.

Billian Publishing has also made a generous contribution of Textile Red Books to the College of Textiles. Used as a valuable resource for company and product information, the Red Books will be distributed to Textile students beginning their job searches. One Hundred Twenty full-sized Red Books were provided in this generous donation.
