GETTING TO KNOW OUR NEW CENTENNIAL SCHOLARS
by Emily Parker, Director of College Relations
On Sunday, August 11th I drove to Asheboro, NC for the Centennial Scholar Retreat. A new crop of Wolfpackers were meeting each other and getting ready to learn more about the new world that they would be embarking upon. I was invited to participate in their team building exercises for the next couple of days. I recalled how I felt about a week before I came to NC State in the late summer of 1991. I remember feeling excited, nervous, scared, happy, a little intimidated, but oh so ready to be on my own. As I walked into the room at Camp Carraway, I saw very young faces, but I saw faces of our future. You see, these students are the Centennial Scholars for the College of Textiles. They are a group of students who came in January 2002 to interview for scholarships at the college.

STUDENTS ON THE LINE FOR TEXTILES
from Lorna Lodholtz, Director of the Annual Fund and Lenora Kraft, Associate Director
Five evenings a week during the academic year, about twenty NC State students gather in a brightly decorated room a block off campus where for several hours they do nothing but talk, sometimes all at the same time. Fortunately, they’re not talking to each other - they’re talking to you and other Textiles alumni!
The calling frenzy began at the end of August so maybe you’ve already gotten a call. If not, expect one soon! Students bring you up-to-date on what’s going on at the university, check to besure that we still have current info about you, and invite you to renew your financial support for the NC State Annual Fund for Textiles. For many alums, it’s a great chance to catch up on what’s happening, but most importantly, it’s a chance for you to give something back to the institution that gave you so much when you were a student.
If you’d like more info about the Annual Fund, visit www.ncsu.edu/annualfund or call 800.258.1057 or 919.515.2034.

BE A COLLEGE OF TEXTILES MENTOR
Are you interested in being a mentor to one of our new freshmen? This year for the first time we are pairing each freshmen with an alum. The purpose of this is for the student to have someone to pull information from that has been through the same experiences in college that they will be going through. The main thing you will have to do to contact this person via phone or email and introduce yourself. Ensure to this new freshmen that you are there for them if they have questions. In other words, you are another person to help them along their way through the College of Textiles. We will try to pair you with a freshmen from where you live so that you may be able to meet this person, but if that is not possible know that the help and guidance that you will supply this student will be very valuable to them. If you are interested in helping in our program please email Emily Parker, Director of College Relations, at emily_parker@ncsu.edu or call her at 919-515-6529.

Big Buddy/ Little Buddy BIG BUDDY/LITTLE BUDDY

Alumni Tailgate

ALUMNI TAILGATE 2002
The Textile Alumni Tailgate was held on September 14th and we hosted the Wake Forest Deamon Deacons in our first ACC game of the season. The event brought over 400 alumni, friends and industry to our big red and white tent located on the west side of the ESA. Once again Ricky Layton provided exceptional barbecue, chicken and all the trimmings. Attendees heard Chancellor Marye Anne Fox speak as well as Johnny Burleson, a 1995 TXM graduate from the COT, who now is the Director of Business Relations and Marketing for the Alumni Association. Lee Fowler also provided a few words and the nationally ranked NC State cheerleaders and band performed for the crowd. Doorprizes were given away and we even provided 32 -13 win over Wake Forest!
Even though the day was a little wet with rain the event was a huge success and provided old friends to see each other again and our current students to meet some of our exceptional alumni.

Recruiter's Reunion
Former and Current Recruiters from 1970-2002

RECRUITER’S WELCOMED HOME
On Friday, September 13th the College of Textiles hosted the second ever High School Recruiter’s Reunion at the BTI Center in downtown Raleigh. The event welcomed back 40 former recruiter’s and their guests. After a social and dinner the recruiters reminisced about stories from the road as a high school recruiter. The reunion gave attendees a chance to catch up with old school mates and meet recruiters from different eras. The recruiters were then invited to attend the alumni tailgate the following day.
