NC STATE TEXTILES STUDENTS DONATE SUPPLIES, CLOTHING TO SCHOOL IN MADAGASCAR
Packing a Truck for Madagascar

A group of students from North Carolina State University’s College of Textiles loaded a truck with books, school supplies, clothing and toys to be donated to a school in Madagascar on Saturday, March 17.

Under the direction of Philip Dail, director of advising and admissions for the College of Textiles, NC State students, faculty and staff have collected approximately 2,000 cubic feet of goods to donate to families in Madagascar. Students have been collecting items to donate since August of last year.

In addition, an ongoing part of this outreach is to show the "going green" component.  A group of 20 students is taking previously worn clothing that have been collected and refashioning the items into new and exciting creations including apparel, but not limited to apparel.  The students are completely immersed in this project.  They are enjoying taking the skills that they have, what they have learned here at the College of Textiles, and learning how those skills can go to help others in need.  The students are having a tea to show their initial items that they have made.  The reception will be here at the College of Textiles on April 14, 2007.  The money from this "go green" refashioning project will go to Uganda to help a baby cottage for abandoned babies.

Mr. Zeis
COLLEGE OF TEXTILES HONORS DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR

A 1962 graduate of the College of Textiles from Istanbul was the recipient of the 2006 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year for the College of Textiles.  Mr. Steve Zeis was honored with the other colleges of NC State at the Evening of Stars Gala on January 26th at the Park Alumni Center on Centennial Campus.

Steve and his wife Frosene from Asheville, NC have both been very supportive of the work being done at the College of Textiles.  Steve’s background includes textile research and development, technical services, textile machinery sales, and in 1983 the couple decided to establish their own business – ZTM Sales & Service Inc.  Steve represented a diverse mix of European textile-machine companies, while Frosene, managed the business side of ZTM.

When Steve reconnected to the College of Textiles a few years back he wanted to give students of all backgrounds the opportunity to pursue their life dreams, so the Zeises established two Centennial Scholarships with a $500,000 bequest and provided an additional $1 million life income gift for another important educational aspect of the College of Textiles – The Frosene and Steve Zeis Textile Extension Education for Economic Development Center.  The Centennial Scholarship is one of the largest college based scholarship programs at NC State covering the majority of college-related expenses plus an enrichment fund.  And the center in their name conducts a wide variety of training courses for industry professionals ranging from Basic Textiles to Six Sigma.  Steve and Frosene Zeis demonstrate that given the opportunity anyone with a dream can make it happen through good education and the drive to succeed.

Greg Museum
TRANSFORMING THE GALLERY: THE GREGG MUSEUM OF ART AND DESIGN

On Sunday, April 29, what has been known as the Gallery of Art & Design (GAD) will officially be renamed the John N. and Nancy C. Gregg Museum of Art & Design. The naming is in honor of the late John N. Gregg and his wife Nancy. The event will be marked with a ribbon-cutting and brunch to honor the Gregg family for their years of leadership and dedication to the GAD and the university.

Dr. Charlotte Vestal Brown, Director of the once Gallery, now the Gregg Musuem of Art & Design, notes, “It is wonderful to honor the Greggs and, in turn, we are honored by the generosity of the Gregg family and the many friends of the GAD. There is no family more fitting to be associated with the Museum, than the Gregg family.”

ARTS NC STATE honored John and Nancy Gregg through the establishment of a $750,000 privately supported endowment, which was fully realized in 2006. The endowment is housed in the NC Textile Foundation and earnings will support the Museum’s Textile Collection, the largest and most significant of the eight collections in the Museum. The Gregg Museum has a permanent collection of over 26,000 objects and presents a series of changing exhibitions of the finest regional, national and international visual arts, beautifully displayed at the Gregg Museum in the Talley Student Center.

Since 1978, the GAD has collected, interpreted and exhibited exemplary hand and machine made objects to foster learning and understanding of the vast cultures of NC and the world. And in the world of art, the change of name from gallery to museum is significant. “ ‘[M]useum’ recognizes what the program is and does on behalf of the university: we collect in order to teach, provide resources for research and present an innovative and far reaching educational program of exhibitions, lectures and other events to enrich the lives of the students and citizens of the state and the region,” says Brown.

John Gregg was a distinguished graduate of the College of Textiles (B.S. ’55) and served the university in a variety of leadership roles, including membership on the Board of Trustees (1989-90). He served as President of the NC Textiles Foundation board in 1985, was the recipient of the Textiles Distinguished Service Award in 1983 and a Watauga Medal Recipient in 1985. He was the CEO and Chairman of Avtex Fibers from 1976-1990. Both John and Nancy were Founding Friends of the Gallery of Art & Design, and Nancy currently serves on the FRIENDS of ARTS NC STATE Board of Advisors.

John Gregg was one of the first and most important individuals who supported the concept and then the realization of a museum for the university. During his tenure as the Chair of NC State Board of Trustees, Gregg played a critical role in raising funds to build the Gallery of Art & Design. He understood from the outset that a museum focused on the university’s curricula could accomplish two major institutional goals: provide resources to enable faculty and students to create unique educational experiences and the opportunity to develop a national institutional presence.

For more information on the Gregg Museum of Art & Design, contact Dr. Charlotte
Vestal Brown at (919) 515-6162.
