The Anni Albers Scholars
Program, a collaboration between the NC State University
world renowned Colleges of Textiles and
Design, provides students with exemplary preparation
in both design and in textile technology. This collaboration
provides an unparalleled undergraduate education combining
professional skills in design with
extensive technological knowledge.
Students
completing the Anni Albers Program will earn two undergraduate
degrees: Bachelor of Science in Textile Technology and Bachelor
of Art and Design.
The program
is named for a designer who exemplifies the ideals and goals
to which the program
aspires: textile designer and artist Anni Albers. Anni Albers
was educated in the Weaving Workshop at the Bauhaus and later
immigrated to the United States and designed at Black
Mountain School in North Carolina. She has provided generations
of American textile designers and fiber artists a philosophical
framework and standard of excellence against which to measure
progress and achievement.
Curriculum and Resources:
The College
of Textiles provides the Anni Albers Scholars with state
of the art instruction in textile design and technology including
technologies such as direct digital printing on fabric, seamless
knitting and computer aided design software for both knitted
and woven fabrics and for textile product development. The
College's Digital Design Lab offers the opportunity for
Albers Scholars to work hands-on with these
technologies. A teaching classroom with
specialized software offers an ideal environment for instruction
in a variety of industry software. Studio spaces, CAD/CAM
and laboratory facilities are available for design and creation
of fabrics and products.
The College
of Design offers Albers Scholars a complete studio-based
art and design education, beginning with a firm foundation
in one of the country's best design fundamentals programs,
followed by intensive upper level studios emphasizing design
process and creative problem solving. The College
provides a hand weaving lab; a printing/dyeing lab; the Harrye
B. Lyons Design Library; College and Departmental
computer labs; and materials labs.
The curriculum
includes one set of courses to fulfill the General Education
Requirements, arranged to meet the
specified
choices in both curricula. For students who begin the Albers
program as a Freshman or Sophomore, the
degree requires
five (5) academic years to complete. For students
who transfer in later, the time required to complete the program
varies and
must be assessed on an individual basis.
Admission:
Students
must be admitted to the College of Textiles, the College
of Design, and the Anni Albers Scholars Program. Specific
procedures vary depending on whether a student is an incoming
freshman, adding a major, or transferring. Specific
application procedures, including portfolio requirements, and
an application form are available on-line.
Seminars and study abroad opportunities:
Anni Albers
Scholars are encouraged to participate in special
programs such as seminars, lectures, field trips and study
abroad experiences. In addition
to the study abroad and internship programs regularly offered
by
the University, opportunities that provide the best fit
with each student's academic program and career interest
are pursued.
The College of Textiles provides many
opportunities to interact with industry through study tours
and internships.
Albers Scholars also engage in design related research projects,
working one on one with faculty members.
