Textile Technology Certificate Program
Recognizes Two New Graduates

The Textile Technology Certificate Program has two new graduates. On September 20, 2011, Dr. A Blanton Godfrey presented certificates to the following recipients:

Ralph Oskwarek, Quality Assurance Technician, Medline Industries
Iris Wang, Vice President, Design and Marketing, Brentano

Both Oskwarek and Wang believe that completing the certificate program had positively affected their work, though they come from different aspects of the textile industry. Oskwarek says of the program, "In December 2009 I was asked to attend a Textile Fundamentals training course that was being held by NC State for Medline's textile reps. I enjoyed the class and received so much information, I wanted to learn more. I worked with my boss and took four more courses and received my Textile Technology Certification. I am using things that I have learned from these courses on a daily basis, and from everything that I learned, I'm a lot more confident in the everyday decisions I have to make being a QC technician. I highly recommend these programs to anybody that wants to learn more about textiles and have hands on experience."

Wang's background in art and design gives her a different perspective. "As an interior designer with an art background, I had previously concentrated on the aesthetics of design, making things beautiful. Learning the technology has awakened me to the fact that design is not limited to its sensual effects. My knowledge in textile technology is now one of my tools for creativity. I can create textiles that meet the needs of real consumers in both pragmatic and sometimes problem-solving ways. I have learned a great deal from the NC State College of Textiles and hope to come back to learn more."

The Textile Technology Certificate program requires that participants complete five textile professional development courses in a three-year period. These courses are selected from a list of core and elective courses, allowing participants to tailor the program to fit their needs.
To date, TexED has awarded certificates to thirteen recipients.

TexED hosting Minitab Preview Day

--November 14, 2011, 12-4pm, College of Textiles

Doug Gorman from Minitab will be on site at the College of Textiles in Room 2431 on Monday, November 14, 2011 from 12:00pm to 4:00pm to share some of their product development plans and to give a sneak preview of their next generation Lean Six Sigma project management and Dashboard software. Doug is a product manager with Minitab and is eager to meet with LSS practitioners such as yourselves, to understand your needs for software tools and reporting and to gather voice of the customer feedback on their newest development project. He is specifically interested in hearing your impressions of the new product and wants to identify feature strengths and gaps from the perspective of Black Belts, Master Black Belts, and Champions who need problem solving tools as well as a means to track and report on project progress, status, benefits, etc.

Doug has been with Minitab for over ten years as a trainer and technical product manager. In addition to gathering VOC on the new Quality Companion product suite, Doug has offered to hold an open Q&A session about Minitab and statistics.

If you are interested please RSVP to no later than Wednesday, October 26, 2011. Jan will also send you information on how to download a parking permit for that day. Lunch will be provided to all attendees by Minitab and there may be other goodies to share.  Please be reminded this is the day before the MBB elective “Mistake Proofing for Robust Processes” so those of you attending the course might want to make your travel plans accordingly.
