Research Interests:
Dr. El-Shafei research activities can be divided into four main thrusts. The first research thrust in Dr. El-Shafei’s group aims at understanding complex phenomena of photostability and photodegradation mechanisms of dyes, pigments and high performance fibers, and their UV protection at the molecular level, with fundamental relevance to fiber and polymer science, using a combination of molecular modeling and experimental approaches. His second research thrust is in the molecular modeling, nanostructure, synthesis and characterization of novel functional dyes for solar cells, photodynamic therapy and self-disinfecting textiles. The third research thrust of Dr. El-Shafei’s group is in nanolayer graft polymerization of chemical finishes and surface chemistry modifications of fibers using high density atmospheric plasma for medical applications. Dr. El-Shafei is also interested in the molecular modeling and structure design of perfluorocarbon polymers and polymer stereoregularity/ cy- clodextrins and dye/cyclodextrin inclusion compounds and their use to enhance properties and performance of textile and non-textile materials.
