The
Eli Whitney Scholars Program
The
Eli Whitney Scholars Program is a double degree program in
Textile and Apparel Management and Multidisciplinary Studies
with a regional concentration. The EWS program addresses the
growing need of the textile and apparel industries for managers
who have a background in textiles and management while at
the same time having demonstrated the ability to live and
work in a foreign environment.
The program provides the textile/apparel and management education
in the coursework required for the BS degree in Textile and
Apparel Management. The BA degree in Multidisciplinary Studies
provides language and culture of a textile relevant region
through specific courses in History, Political Sciences, International
Communications, and Foreign Languages. The available regions
are Central Europe, Latin America, and Pacific Rim. In addition
to the coursework, each Eli Whitney Scholar has to work in
the region of his or her concentration in an internship for
at least one summer.
To date over 40 Eli Whitney Scholars are in the program or
have graduated from the program. With the end of the Spring
2001 semester, the coordination of the program will be transferred
from Dr. Helmut Hergeth to Dr. Nancy Cassill who can be reached
at Nancy_Cassill@ncsu.edu

College
of Textiles Summer Research Program
The
NCSU College of Textiles Summer Research Program, funded by
the North Carolina Textile Foundation, is a great opportunity
for high school students to experience the college atmosphere
while exploring one of five areas of concentration: engineering,
chemistry, management/marketing, computer science, or apparel/design.
The program consists of four one-week experiences. The dates
for summer 2001 are June 17-22, June 24-29, July 8-13 or July
15-20. Students are placed in their week of choice based on
availability.
Throughout
the week students live in a residence hall and attend lectures
on various topics including science, engineering and technology.
While on-campus, students are informed about the admissions
process, scholarship opportunities and the importance of academics.
In the afternoons, the participants work in research teams
on a specific project led by a NCSU College of Textiles Professor.
In the evenings, students participate in fun activities that
will allow them to get to know each other, as well as allow
them to learn about NC State University. The week concludes
with each group presenting their project to other group members,
faculty and parents.
Participants
are selected based on academic and extracurricular merit and
a genuine interest in learning about NC State and the programs
offered through the College of Textiles.
If you
know of prospective high school students that may be interested
in the program or have any questions, please feel free to
contact Carolyn
Carter (919-515-6606).
