TATM Graduate Director
Looking
to enter the textiles field? Want to further your textile
education? Interested in research defining the textile industry
of the future? Graduate programs in the Textile and Apparel,
Technology and Management (TATM) Department at North Carolina
State University are available to fulfill your educational
needs. Students in the department may pursue one of five
different graduate study options. The typical background
for the students entering graduate studies is an undergraduate
degree in textiles, engineering, management, or design.
What
is Textiles? In our program, textiles includes the design,
management, and technology of fiber based products and processes.
Textile design students explore issues in new product development,
body scanning, direct digital printing, computer aided engineering
(CAE) and computer aided design (CAD). Textile management
includes such topics as international marketing, business
finance, supply chain management, total quality management,
data mining and information systems. Biomedical textiles,
industrial fabrics, three dimensional textile structures,
aerospace applications are examples of new areas of textile.
In addition to new manufacturing technology, students are
involved with information technologies such as enterprise
resource planning (ERP) systems, manufacturing execution
systems (MES), and CAD/CAM. To compete in a global textile
environment students study how to enhance textile operations
from "bale to sale".
There
are over 60 students currently enrolled in the graduate
programs. Thesestudents bring an international diversity
to the program and are from countries such as China, France,
Germany, India, Korea, Turkey, and the USA.
Students
participate in the ongoing research programs in the department
and have the opportunity to present their findings both
nationally and internationally. Select "View Graduate
Student Profiles" for brief biographies.
The
TATM department includes over 24 faculty who teach, conduct
research, and provide outreach services to the textile industry.
The faculty conducted over three million dollars of research
last year. The department is located in the College of Textiles
on the Centennial Campus of North Carolina State University.
Below are links to a selection of web sites featuring faculty
research.

1.
Masters of Science Degree: This is a two year program
with options in technology, management and design. Students
are required to conduct research and write a thesis. Most
of the students in this program work with faculty on funded
research projects. This program requires approximately two
years of study.
2.
Masters of Textiles Degree: This program requires only
coursework and no thesis. This program is for students who
are looking to further their education in textiles, but
are not pursuing an additional doctoral research degree.
3.
Masters of Textiles Degree via TOTE: Textiles Off-Campus
Televised Education (TOTE) program allows a student to receive
the masters of textiles degree without any residency requirement.
Video tapes of courses are provided to students. We are
now in the process of implementing many of these courses
via the Internet. Students who are currently working full
time in the textile industry and want to continue their
education often pursue this program of study.
4.
Ph.D. in Textile Technology Management: Students
in this program examine the interface between management
and textile technology. The College of Textiles administers
this doctoral degree and it requires approximately three
years of study beyond the masters degree.
5.
Ph.D. in Fiber and Polymer Science: Students in this
program work on developing new fibers and textile processing
equipment. The College of Textiles administers this doctoral
degree and it requires approximately three years of study
beyond the masters degree.
