Meets East
by
Su-Jeong Hwang, Karla Simmons, Lashawnda
McKimmon, Lisa Parrillo Chapman and Cynthia Istook
Doctoral Students
from the Department of Textile & Apparel Technology & Management
(TATM) attended the International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA)
and the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles (KSCT) Joint World Conference
in Seoul, Korea, June 12-15, 2001. The theme of the conference was "Expanding
Horizons" and scholars and professionals were invited from the global
community to consider, explore, and question how we could expand our future
vision in textiles and clothing. Faculty and graduate students from North
Carolina State University were: Dr. Nancy Cassill, Dr. Cindy Istook, Lisa
Parrillo Chapman, Su-Jeong Hwang, Lashawnda McKimmon and Karla Simmons.
We presented in each of the major subject sections, including research/scholarship,
creative teaching/curriculum, design/artwork, and the special 3-Dimensional
Body-Scanning session. During the conference, we had opportunities to
meet people from other countries, experience a different culture, and
broaden our international research network.
Presentations
at Seoul National University:
Before the Conference, Dr. Cassill, Dr. Istook and the graduate students
were invited to present their research at the SNU-NCSU Joint Workshop
on 3-D Measurement Technology at the School of Materials Science and Engineering
at Seoul National University. The presentation was an overview of body
scanning and digital printing technologies and how they might be utilized
to create the exact products (primarily apparel) that each individual
consumer might want or need. These technologies are of vital importance
to Rapid Prototyping and Mass Customization strategies that are becoming
more and more important in the marketplace. Dr. Istook spoke on "Developing
Products for a Market of One", Su-Jeong's
topic was "3-D
Body Scanning Principles", Lashawnda's topic was "Accuracy of
3-D Body Scanning", Karla's topic was "Body Measurement Issues",
and Lisa's topic was "Concepts for Developing a Flexible and Agile
System to Create Textile Repeat Designs".
At the completion
of the workshop, we had the opportunity to meet with the attendees of
the conference and share a traditional Korean meal.
Presentations
at ITAA/KSCT:
In the special
session held on June 12, Dr. Istook presented "Three-dimensional
Non-Contact Measurement in Textile/Apparel Science". On June 13,
in the concurrent session on Fit and Technology, Su-Jeong Hwang presented
" Body Measurement Terminology Used in the Apparel Industry",
and Karla Simmons presented "Body Measurement Techniques: A Comparison
of 3 Dimensional Body Scanning and Physical Anthropometric Methods".
On June 14 in the poster session on Innovative Teaching and Textiles,
Lisa Parrillo Chapman presented "Teaching Product Development with
Off-the-shelf Software" while Lashawnda McKinnon presented "Digital
Printing in the Textile Complex".
On June 15, Lisa Parrillo Chapman presented "Butterfly Garden"
in the design session.
Conference Events:
The keynote
speaker was Dr.Kihwan Kim, International Advisor, Goldman Sachs, who shared
globalization strategies for The Korean Textile and Apparel industry.
Migliore, a major fashion chain, and the Korean Chamber of Commerce sponsored
fashion shows of two famous Korean designers. Lee Young Hee showed her
pret a porter during the conference dinner on the 14th and Andre Kim closed
the conference with his show on the 15th. Designer Lee's designs left
a strong impression on us. The garments combined traditional Korean custom
with modern influences and were the most beautiful dresses we had ever
seen. Andre Kim, Korea's most famous fashion designer, presented his "Fashion
Fantasia". His show also left us in awe, particularly the elaborate
"Korean Legend of the Seven Veil".
Visits to Universities:
While in Seoul, we visited three universities Ewha Woman's University,
Seoul National University and Yonsei University. At each university we
met the professors and students, toured their facilities, and shared research
information. We found that we all had common goals and hope to collaborate
in the future.
This conference provided
a great opportunity to discover new ideas in research and design, experience
Korean culture and traditions, and communicate with international colleagues.
Our friends that we met in Korea were so gracious and their cultural and
research experiences provided meaningful graduate school experiences.
