Peter
Cunningham, Director and Christy Cagle, Trade Assistant The Textile Trade Symposium 2001 was held at NC State University's College of Textiles on October 26, 2001. A total of 52 persons attended the event from academia, government, industry, and trade organizations. The focus of the conference was on international trade and was a collaborated effort of the College of Textiles at NC State University, the International Trade Division of the North Carolina Department of Commerce, and the Hosiery Technology Center. The conference consisted of, a morning conference for the hosiery industry and an afternoon conference for the textiles and apparel industries. The morning conference contained two tracks: one for the hosiery association and a "Doing Business in Mexico" briefing for the Exintex Trade Show participants in Mexico. Both tracks came together for a joint Export Financing Session.
The first track was a presentation aimed at North Carolina hosiery manufacturers, predominantly small firms who have not had a lot of exporting experience. The purpose of this conference track was to introduce these firms to the Foreign Trade Representatives from the International Trade Division (ITD), to educate them on the assistance that is offered to them by the Department, and to educate them on each of the markets where the department has offices. The ITD has six trade consultants that specialize in specific industries important to North Carolina; offices are in six countries, including Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Mexico, and Korea. Glenn Jackman is the trade consultant specializing in the textiles, apparel and hosiery industries. The main focus of the ITD is to bring more jobs to North Carolina by assisting North Carolina companies in exporting to foreign countries and therefore increasing their market share. The second track of the conference was a briefing on Exintex 2001. Exintex is an annual trade show held in Puebla, Mexico. The ITD has a North Carolina Pavilion and takes North Carolina companies there to introduce them to the Mexican market. Exintex was a great success for North Carolina companies last year, resulting in actual sales of over $10 million for the 28 companies that attended.
The morning ended with a joint session on Export Financing by the US Export-Import Bank and the Small Business Association, Export Finance Office to educate the companies on the programs offered by these government agencies. The second part of the conference was aimed at the textiles and apparel industry and featured presentations by industry representatives who have had exporting experience in The Americas and CBI, Asia, and Europe. James T. Fain, III, North Carolina Secretary of Commerce and Dr. Blanton Godfrey, Dean of the NCSU College of Textiles both gave remarks about the importance of the textile industry in North Carolina and how exporting was going to be important in keeping North Carolina textile companies in business. Dr. Peter Kilduff and Dr. Nancy Cassill gave a presentation on the trade research currently taking place at NC State University College of Textiles. Rory Holmes and Dr. Behnam Pourdeyhimi, also of NC State University COT, gave a presentation on the Nonwovens Cooperative Research Center, giving an overview of the program, their research interests, and how companies can become involved with the center. Jim Leonard of Jim Leonard and Associates, Dan Morrison of Harriet and Henderson, and Dr. R. Hayman Kite of the Monday Group gave presentations on their experiences with exporting to The Americas and CBI. Scott Simpson of Unified Manufacturing gave an overview of his experiences in exporting to Japan and gave some recommendations on how to deal with the cultural differences between Japan and the US. North Carolina's International Trade Division-through two domestic and six foreign office locations-provides expert assistance to North Carolina businesses seeking to take advantage of overseas market opportunities. Trade consultants in Raleigh, Charlotte and High Point are available to assist companies in tapping into resources and programs that can help their business grow through international sales.
