The new Anni
Albers Scholars Program, initiated in January 2001, is an innovative
collaboration between the North Carolina State University College
of Textiles and NCSU College of Design. This provides students simultaneously
with exemplary preparation in textile technology and in design.
Because both Colleges are world renowned, NCSU is in a unique position
to provide an unparalleled undergraduate textile design education.
Scholars completing
the five year program earn two degrees: a Bachelor of Science in
Textile Technology and a Bachelor of Art and Design. This challenging
and rewarding program enhances graduates' creative flexibility and
employment opportunities by combining comprehensive professional
skills in design with extensive, timely technological knowledge.
Graduates are poised to become innovative leaders in the field,
as evidenced by

has already been shown in an International juried exhibition (Figure

The College
of Textiles provides Anni Albers Scholars with complete instruction
in the many facets of textile technology, while the College of Design
offers a complete studio-based
art and design education. The design education begins with a firm
foundation in one of the country's best design fundamentals programs
followed by intensive upper level studios emphasizing design process
and creative problem solving. Up to date CAD/CAM
facilities including direct digital printing on fabric and
computer aided design software for both knitted and woven fabrics provide the opportunity
to work with the latest technologies. Studio space, a hand
weaving lab, and a printing/dyeing lab are available for creating
fabrics and garments. The Burlington Textiles Library and the Harrye
B. Lyons Design Library house an exhaustive collection of textile
design related resources.

The program
is named for a person who exemplifies the ideals and goals to which
the program aspires: textile designer and artist Anni
Albers. Her
work and writings have provided generations of American textile
designers and fiber artists a philosophical framework and standard
of excellence against which to measure progress and achievement
in the medium.
Students must
have a 3.0 (or high school equivalent) GPA to qualify for the program.
Applicants must be admitted to both the College of Textiles and
the College of Design (including portfolio review) through the usual
processes and according to published timelines. For more information,
