Opportunities for innovative directions in textile product design abound in the College of Textiles at NCSU. A new Masters degree option for both the Master of Science and Master of Textiles Degrees offered by the Department of Textile and Apparel, Technology and Management (TATM) has recently been approved. Additionally, the new Anni Albers Dual Degree Scholars Program in Textile Design, offered jointly by the Colleges of Textiles and Design, is well underway. Just look what the students have been up to this semester!

Anni Albers Scholars teamed with Apparel Management students to produce NCSU's first competitive entries for the Greensboro Triad Textile and Apparel Club (GTTAC) annual Gala design competition. Guilford Mills, Inc. and Burlington Industries, Inc. sponsored the NCSU entries, providing the competition fabrics for each design team. Design teams were challenged to create innovative and novel garment designs from those fabrics. Finished designs were presented, along with those from other participating schools, in a runway show at the GTTAC Gala on October 25, 2002 in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Despite intense competition, Branan Hackney, a junior in the Anni Albers program, and Brienne Powell , a sophomore in Apparel Management, won an award with their entry sponsored by Burlington fabrics. The design constructed of denim was hand painted by the designers. Each panel of the garment was lined and the edges wired allowing the design to be sculpted into a shape reminiscent of flower petals and leaves.

The first textile product design studio offered at the graduate level was offered this Fall 2002. The course focuses on design fundamentals and technologies, and culminates in an extensive textile product design project. Projects completed by the fourteen graduate students emphasized utilizing technology to create innovative textile products ranging from clothing, to wall hangings, to recycled and redesigned apparel, to functional accessory products. Students were encouraged to take advantage of any of the technologies available in the College to create their innovative pieces, and also to seek out additional technologies to support their work.

In creating their works, students used many different technologies such as digital printing on textiles, CAD for print, embroidery and crochet design, and computerized embroidery as can be seen in the accompanying pictures.
It was a creative semester for design students at NCSU College of Textiles!
