The annual conference of the International Foundation of Fashion Technology Institutes (IFFTI) was held November 7-9, 2002 in Hong Kong. Hong Kong Polytechnic University hosts this conference.

As graduate students, we were fortunate to attend and present our research. In all, there were 174 delegates from 17 different countries who attended the IFFTI conference.

The conference theme was "Fashion and Textiles: the New Frontiers-Design, Technology, and Business."

Seven keynote speakers presented research to the conference delegates, including two NCSU professors. Dr. Nancy Cassill, "Global Partnerships: The Textile Company of the Future," and Dr. Cynthia Istook, "U.S. Sizing Standards and the US Female Consumer."

Plenary presentation topics included fashion design and innovation, information technology applications, fashion marketing, merchandising and retailing. In all, there were 90 presentations and 27 posters. The conference banquet at the Hotel Nikko included authentic Hong Kong cuisine and the attendees enjoyed Chinese entertainment.
While the main purpose of our trip to Hong Kong was to attend the conference, there were many additional distinctive opportunities for us. Prior to the conference, we had a chance to meet with textile industry personnel. At WingTaiAsia, a full package sourcing company, we learned shier approach to the changing global market dynamics. VF Asia personnel. shared sourcing experiences with us and gave extensive information about modern expertise in Asia. CITA, the Clothing Industry Training Authority, included a close look at the training programs for management and employees. We then met with Burlington Worldwide International, a subsidiary of Burlington Industries, Co.; personnel. shared the company's strategies for global sourcing and strategic alliances.

Attending the conference and meeting industry experts gave us a graduate school experience to increase our knowledge base and was a creative venue for sharing our research with global industry and academic participants.
