Alliance for Progress
Robert Barnhardt, Professor and Dean Emeritus

The recently announced alliance between the College of Textiles at NCSU and the Institute of Textile Technology (ITT) is an outstanding example of the continuous development of the concept of the NCSU Centennial Campus. Formed in the mid 1980's, the vision of the Centennial Campus was a place where the university, research institutes, industry, and government agencies, could pool their resources including the sharing of personnel, laboratories, intellectual knowledge bases, and graduate students to increase the economic power of North Carolina and the United States.

The concept of ITT parallels that of the Centennial Campus. Nearly 60 years ago several textile industry leaders met to discuss the need for collaboration among competing U.S. textile companies for the greater benefit of the industry as a whole. Much has changed during the recent decades including the location of the industry, the rise of Raleigh as a center for textile and apparel research, and the jet as a principal manner of travel.

An ALLIANCE between the NCSU College of Textiles and ITT is a natural evolution for centers of excellence and another example of creative textile education. The alliance formed will facilitate the effective accomplishment of the ITT/NCSU mutual missions including preparing graduates to assume leadership positions in the industry, building upon proven research abilities, and amassing the finest collection of textile literature in the world.
