Internships: An Investment in the Future
Nancy B. Powell, Associate Professor

Internship participation can be a creative and valuable experience for a student. An internship is also an effective way to expand a company's team of associates!

One of NCSU's College of Textile intern success stories is Mary Gruenhagen's experience during Summer 2002. Mary worked in the Materials Design and Development at Nike's World Headquarters. After an interview with Nike personnel, Mary submitted a Material Project Proposal for a sport boot. Her proposal reflected her motivation to research a market, her knowledge of textile technology, and her creative thinking abilities. Mary's qualifications and proposal earned her a place on an innovative global development team for Summer 2002.

"My activities during the internship were so worthwhile because they were all related to my course work at the College of Textiles," commented Mary Gruenhagen. "It was great to apply my skills outside of the university. Now I feel I can go anywhere and do what I want to do because it has increased my confidence in my abilities."

Mary was involved in the development process from consumer research to supplier interaction to product launch. As in many intern programs, Mary's work was evaluated not only by her employer but also by her independent study advisor at the NCSU College of Textiles. The employer's comments reflect Mary's outstanding accomplishments and the company's enthusiasm about her contribution. A positive experience on both the student's and the employer's part will increase the future likelihood that the employer will provide internships in the future and that College of Textiles students will be top candidates!
