Creative Textile Education for Non-Textile Graduate Students
Pam Banks-Lee, Ph.D.

Success in the global textile complex requires involvement of persons from a wide variety of disciplines such as engineers, designers and artists, chemists and other scientists, economists, marketers, and professionals. Like our industry, the College of Textiles at North Carolina State University encourages students from disciplines other than Textiles to enroll in our graduate programs. To help students who are desiring graduate education in Textiles, but do not hold an undergraduate degree in Textiles, the College of Textiles offers "Understanding the Textile Complex" as a introductory textile class.

The new course offered Fall 2002, provided students with a variety of textile related topics, beggining at the fiber stage and ending with the consumer.

Because the course surveys the many disciplines utilized in textiles, diverse faculty from both the Textile and Apparel, Technology and Management Department (TATM) and the Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science Department (TECS) join together and served as instructors for the course.

Using multiple faculty members as instructors for this course also allows students to gain first hand information about the many ongoing research efforts in the College.

Students also visit research and teaching laboratories and discuss ongoing projects with support staff.
