NCSU College of Textiles’ Faculty Visit Italian Textile Machinery Industry March 2003, five NCSU College of Textiles faculty were guests of the Italian Trade Commission (ITC) on a sponsored trade mission to Italy. This trip allowed Professors Powell, Seyam, Oxenham, Pourdeyhimi, and Mock to see first-hand the type of textile technology available in Italy --- and the niche that Italian machinery technology fills. This study tour in /is one of the many ways that our College keeps abreast of the ever changing textile industry dynamics! (Left to Right) Prof. Gary Mock, Prof. William Oxenham, Prof. Nancy Powell, Asst. Trade Commissioner Alessandro Mussa, Prof. Abdelfattah Seyam and Prof. Behnam Pourdeyhimi Professor Gary Mock’s expertise in the areas of dyeing and finishing. Gary has worked with Milliken Research Corporation, Burlington Research and Gaston County Dyeing Machine Company on two summer assignments. For the past 27 years he has visited dyeing and finishing operations around the world and written about these experiences for several textile journals. He currently serves as a Technical Editor for Textile World. His article on dyeing and finishing technologies (Textile World article) provides new innovations in this area. Professor William Oxenham, Associate Dean for Academic Programs, and Abel C. Lineberger Professor, is known for his expertise in yarns and yarn spinning. Bill provides interesting perspectives and updates on yarn spinning technologies to academic and industry audiences around the world. His article on yarn spinning (Textile World article) discusses several yarn spinning innovations. Professor Behnam Pourdeyhimi, Director of the Nonwovens Cooperative Research Center (NCRC), has expertise in the area of nonwovens and nonwoven technologies. Behnam oversees the various directives of nonwovens research at NCSU, including the new state-of-the-art nonwovens melt-blown facility located on the NCSU Centennial Campus. Nonwovens technology (Textile World article) is the focus of Behnam's article. Professor Nancy Powell has expertise in the area of textile design, with a special interest in seamless knitting technology. Nancy has 27 years of industry experiences and brings to the College an important market perspective regarding new textile products and technology. Seamless knitting technology provides creative product development opportunities for various textile end uses (Textile World article). In addition, seamless knitting technology provides creative “downstream” (retailer) in-store marketing opportunities ("Design: Italian Style"). Professor Abdelfattah Seyam is recognized internationally for his expertise in formation and structure of woven fabrics. His combined industry and academic experience brings to the readers interesting futuristic perspective regarding weaving technologies and woven fabric research. Weavers are faced with intensified competition more than at any time in history and Abdelfattah’s article addresses what the Italian weaving industry practices to face such global intensified competition (Textile World article).
