NCSU
Library Receives Computer Aided Design (CAD) Materials
Professor Nancy Powell, Associate Professor
The
Special Collections department of the NCSU Library system has recently
received an important documentation of the development of computer aided
design from Ms. Alison Hardy. The FabriCAD archives include documents,
articles, CD-ROMs and diskettes of software demonstrations, videos
and fabric samples.
Alison Grudier Hardy, a key leader in the Computer Aided Textile Design
Association (CITDA) and in the evolution of the role of CAD design for
the industry over
the last 20 years, established the FabriCAD newsletter and then website
in the 1990’s (see the internet archive at http://fabriCAD.com)
to service CAD technicians, designers, and vendors as a valuable resource
for resumes,
calendar of events, contacts, suppliers, and an e-store for books and
other
supplies. The FabriCAD e-store offered reports, books, software and informative
newsletter reprints. The on line bulletin board created a meeting place
for many cross functional interests in digital design.
This collection will provide the researcher with a history of not only
CAD development but also digital printing. Images, brochures, catalogs
and international
meetings proceedings and presentations provide valuable insight into
the progress of this now integral method of product development.
One of the most informative publications by FabriCAD was the CAD Salary
and Job Satisfaction Survey. This survey, conducted since 1995, tracks
changes
and trends in compensation for designers and stylists who are computer
users. For example, in the Sixth Annual survey published in 2000, the
average salary
for assistant designers was $32,949 and $67,000 for Managers. The survey
also reflected the design for further training by designers and request
for additional software developments.

In February of 2003 when FabriCAD announced the website was closing
many professionals in the industry and academia refused to say farewell
to
Allison and her contributions to the CAD community. “It has been
fascinating to watch the birth and development of CAD over the last two
decades,
and it's
evolution from a curiosity to an everyday tool.” commented Ms.
Hardy.
On learning of the closure, Professor Nancy Powell, College of Textiles
and a former board member of CITDA, contacted Ms. Honora Nerz of the
Burlington
Textiles Library and Mr. Bernie McTigue of Special Collections concerning
arrangements to acquire this interesting collection. Ms. Lois Black
will be the contact person for working with the collection. Lois_Black@ncsu.edu.
The Special Collections are located on the ground floor of the D.H.
Hill Library.
The mission of Special Collections is to preserve and make collections
of historical and research value available to researchers. All researchers
are
welcome to use Special Collections materials. You do not need to be
affiliated with NC State University to use the collections. Registration
and a picture
id are required for onsite use of materials. Research inquiries are
accepted in person, and by telephone, US mail, or electronic mail.
Special Collections Department's holdings come from donations by friends
of the Libraries and the university. The staff of the Special Collections
Department welcomes the opportunity to review collections that may
have significant historic or scholarly value to the library and to
the university. http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/archives
