MEDTEX03
by Kristin Thoney, Assistant Professor

MEDTEX03, an international conference and exhibition on healthcare and medical textiles, was held on July 8th and 9th at the Moat House Hotel in Bolton, UK The conference was sponsored by the Bolton Institute, a leading center for materials research, in association with Tampere University of Technology in Finland.

"The Conference"

This was the third such conference organized by the Bolton Institute, with previous conferences in 1996 and 1999. Conference sessions consisted of biomaterials, woundcare and implantables, bandaging and pressure garments, medical devices, healthcare and hygiene, and new technology and smart materials, as well as posters and exhibits. Conference speakers included doctors, nurses, clinical researchers, and professors. NCSU College of Textiles included Dr. Martin King, Professor in the field of medical textiles whom presented his research article entitled "Weaving Innovation With Anatomy." Although the conference participants were primarily from Europe, there were also representatives from North America, Asia, and Africa. The conference was truly diverse in interests and perspectives, and was of value to both those experienced in and new to medical textiles.
