AATCC Internship
Erin Smith, M.S. Student

A Summer 2003 internship with the American Association for Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC) was a valuable opportunity. This experience provided an opportunity to understand the organizational structure, the importance of market research to AATCC, and to work closely with the development of the Consumer 2 Concept Program (CC2C). The objective of the 10-week project was to construct a list of companies to replace the existing recipients of complimentary AATCC Review subscriptions. To support AATCC’s Concept 2 Consumer program, the new complimentary subscription list was targeted at representatives of the creative teams of companies.

Designers, merchandisers, and product development personnel within retail, design and manufacturing companies were targeted to complement the existing technical reader base of AATCC Review. AATCC’s Concept 2 Consumer program seeks to facilitate communication in the international textile industry by bridging information gaps between technical and creative branches.

Contact lists, industry publications, and directories were used to identify potential companies. A list of companies was compiled, and the AATCC Publications Department sent a letter to each company notifying them of their free one-year subscription, extending to them an invitation to join AATCC.

This experience provided an in-depth understanding of an applied research process, and the development of a research project for the Master of Science thesis. Also, this summer experience provided valuable networking with personnel from AATCC as well as the greater textile community.
