Mission Statement

To establish a high quality forum relevant to the needs of global industry and higher education that will provide leadership in the timely dissemination of information dealing with all aspects of textile and apparel, technology and management.

BS in Textile Technology
Subhash Batra, Professor

The B.S. in Textile Technology is designed to prepare students for careers in design, development and manufacture of fiber-based products used in a myriad of applications, such as aerospace, medicine, architecture, automotive, apparel and sports. The scope of the complex of industries that produce these products is only partially illustrated by about 24 billion pounds of fiber consumption in the US annually; this amounts to over 80 lb of fiber per person. The students entering this program are challenged and trained to participate in this great enterprise. In addition, the students are expected to become mature adults concerned about their families, communities, the nation and humanity at large.

A. To become top-notch professionals, holding positions of high responsibility, they learn about:

1.
Materials they must deal with (fibers).
2.
Methods (technologies) by which the fibers are converted to useful products, including the numerous intermediate steps or stages.
3.
Designing the products to meet performance requirements and for aesthetics.
4.
Measuring, or assessing, the performance characteristics (quality) of the products.

To pursue personal interests in greater depth, students are allowed to choose concentrations in polymer science, statistics, topics in management, textile design, textile technology, or apparel technology. The department is equipped with laboratories to make products (yarns, fabrics, clothing) from fibers, CAD/CAM & computational facilities, and testing laboratories.

To become well-rounded mature adults, functioning constructively as citizens in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic society, they are expected to devote a substantial part (about 20-25%) of their formal studies to selected topics in humanities and social sciences.

Furthermore, the students enrolled in this program may also seek to enroll in a dual degree program, called the Anni Albers Scholars Program, which leads to the additional degree in Art & Design from the College of Design. The Anni Albers Scholars Program offers a complete studio-based art and design education, including creative problem solving and learning through hands-on-experience.

The Anni Albers program is collaborative between the NCSU Colleges of Textiles and Design. It provides opportunity for synthesis of textile technology, art and design.
