NCSU Graduate Student Wins International Award
Traci May-Plumlee, Assistant Professor

Genevieve Lawrence Garland, M.S. Textiles 2002, was awarded the International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA) Graduate Student Paper Award in the Masters Degree category for 2003. Genevieve’s paper, “Digital Simulation of Handcrafted Textile Prints: A Process Framework” was based on the thesis research she completed at NCSU. The Graduate Student Paper Competition is a long standing tradition in ITAA. ITAA recognizes only two outstanding graduate research papers annually, one at the Masters level, and one at the Doctoral level. Genevieve is the first recipient from NCSU. The prestigious and highly competitive award includes the opportunity to present the paper at the annual conference, this year in Savannah, Georgia. In addition to the opportunity to present, the award also includes conference registration fees and a cash award of $500.

Genevieve received her B.S. degree in Textile and Apparel Management concentrating in Apparel from North Carolina State University, College of Textiles. While an undergraduate, she was awarded AAFA student scholarships for two years and was AAFA Outstanding Apparel Student of the Year in 2000. She remained at NCSU for her Masters work including a minor in Design. During her Master’s program Genevieve exhibited her textile and clothing artwork at juried events and in a solo exhibition. The focus of her Master’s research was “Digital Printing and Traditional Surface Design Techniques,” under the guidance of Dr. Traci May-Plumlee. She presented her initial Master’s work at the ITAA Annual Conference in New York in August, 2002, and has since concluded the research and developed it into the award winning paper. Genevieve is currently working on her Ph.D. in Textile Technology and Management in the College of Textiles where she is a full-time instructor. She is also a consultant at [TC]2 in Cary, NC.
