Cotton Incorporated Internship
Genessa Fratto, M.S. Student

During the summer of 2003, I worked as an intern in the Strategic Planning Division of Cotton Incorporated, at their World Headquarters in Cary, NC. As a master’s student in the Textile Technology Management program, this internship was important and useful to enhance my studies and research at North Carolina State University.

The focus of the internship was a retail audit of children’s apparel. A market research tool, the retail audit was used gain insight into the current children’s apparel product offerings at national retailers. Having had previous work experience in children’s apparel product development at the William Carter Company in Atlanta, GA, this project built upon my education in the College of Textiles, as well as my work experience. The retail audit was conducted in Raleigh, NC, Denver, CO and St. Louis, MO. Six major retail stores were audited and information was collected on over 8,000 children’s apparel products in the areas of fiber, price, style, size and country of origin. At the completion of my internship, I presented my research and findings to the President and CEO as well as several other executives within the organization.

In addition to completing the children’s apparel retail audit, I also had the opportunity to attend the Cotton Incorporated EFS System Conference in Greenville, SC, as well as a Lifestyle Monitor brainstorming session at Cotton Incorporated’s Consumer Marketing Headquarters in New York.

Currently, the children’s apparel retail audit data is being used to identify key areas for strategic planning in children’s apparel. This internship experience has guided my interests in future career opportunities in the area of marketing research, as well as thesis direction for the completion of my degree in May 2004.
