College
of Textiles Students Attend High Point Furniture Market: Women in the Home Industries Today, better known as WithIt, invited NCSU College of Textile students to attend the High Point Furniture Market on Tuesday, October 21, 2003.
Students were paired with a female industry executive for a day of education and insight to the furniture industry. Each student had the opportunity to tour showrooms, network with industry executives and learn about the dynamics of the Market. This was an excellent opportunity to see classroom concepts put into application, such as product branding and licensing, use of price points and retail mark-up implementation. Mentors readily answered student questions and gave career advice. “I really enjoyed seeing such a huge trade show in action,” said Ashley Forsythe, a senior in textile management. “I was able to take in so much information from different people with different career fields, and I felt like it was very beneficial to everyone to be able to see what type of career paths are available in the industry, from marketing to sales to buying and designing. We had the opportunity to interact with some prominent women in the industry who have become very successful at what they do.” This is the second year the College of Textiles has participated in this event. Student interest has risen, with twenty students attending this year’s program. The
WithIt organization is dedicated to encouraging and developing leadership,
mentoring,
education and opportunity
for professional women in the home furnishings industry. Twice
a year, students are invited to attend Withit’s mentoring day at
the market, providing students the opportunity to gain practical, real-world
exposure
to the furniture and home furnishings industry and the career paths it
has to offer. |
