Dr. Gary W. Smith, Associate Professor, was recently given the 2003-2004 Board of Governors’ Award for Excellence in Teaching. Each year one Professor from each of the Colleges at NCSU is selected by his or her peers for this award for their contributions to and excellence in teaching. At the College of Textiles graduation ceremony on May 15th, 2004, Dr. Smith was recognized for this Outstanding Teaching Award.

Michelle R. Jones, Assistant Professor, was named the 2004 Teacher of the Year for the College of Textiles and the 2004 Outstanding Advisor for the College of Textiles by the North Carolina Textile Foundation, Inc. Dr. Jones, who joined the college in July 2000, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Textile and Apparel, Technology and Management, and teaches textile marketing and financial management at the undergraduate level, and strategic management for textile firms at the graduate level.

Two members of the College of Textiles received the NCSU Outstanding Extension Service Award: Dr. Barbara Scruggs and Dr. Nancy Cassill. The award is given in recognition of dedication and demonstrated achievements in serving the people of North Carolina. Dr. Barbara Scruggs is a research associate in the College's Center for Research in Textile Protection and Comfort. The focus of her work is in consulting and assisting textile manufacturers with product evaluation for developments designed to improve comfort and protection for targeted applications. Dr. Nancy Cassill is a Professor in the Department of Textile and Apparel, Technology and Management. Nancy is a leading participant in the development of new textile trade programs with the Department of Commerce (national and state levels) and other governing organizations to further ensure that the textile community is being served by the resources available at the university. In addition, Nancy brings together companies in need of creative solutions with students who need to gain practical experience thereby, offering a mutually beneficial exchange of ideas and resources.
