A Sure Sign of Spring: Fourth Annual“Collection” Show
The annual North Carolina State University “Collection”-Art To Wear event continues to grow in popularity in its fourth year. This show is a student run exhibition of wearable art, clothing and accessories design from students in the College of Design and College of Textiles. Students volunteer their time outside of class to organize and create collections for this outdoor runway show. This year showcased 23 student designers, with the support of 30 volunteers. Approximately four hundred friends, family and other guests were in attendance.
The show begins as a glimmer in the eye of the designers, and is produced through teamwork and lots of help from volunteers and faculty. The show requires an appropriate venue, music, video, photography, funding, lots of decorations, food, publicity within the community, and of course, the design work itself! All the experience in planning and arranging these details extends student education beyond design and into areas like business, teamwork, and community interaction.
The show is a myriad of styles of wearable art ranging from high fashion to costume to sculpture for the body. All types of design are accepted and encouraged; and the show is, accordingly, incredibly varied and invigorating. “The creativity of the designs and the impeccable construction of these garments sometimes make it hard to believe that the designers are student artists” says Ashley Newsome, Art to Wear 2005 chairperson. The Collection show reflects the hard work, dedication and talent of NCSU students.
This collaboration between Art and Design and Textiles has proven to be a great combination. Also the Graphic Design, the Communications Department and “The Technician” have brought the campus community together on this project in a really cohesive manner. The show had an exponentially larger turnout this year than last, and shows no signs of slowing down. Each year it grows in intensity and importance, and is a fresh and fun experience for students, faculty and the community. The show is held every spring, and is sponsored by the Anni Albers Scholars Program, a double major program between Art and Design and Textile Apparel Management. |
