Lisa Fratto Awarded 2005 Nancy G. Pollock NCSU Graduate School Thesis Award Lisa Fratto, a recent Master of Science (M.S.) graduate in Textile Technology Management, NCSU College of Textiles, has been awarded the Nancy G. Pollock 2005 NCSU Graduate School Thesis Award for the College of Textiles. Lisa’s master’s thesis, "Evaluating the Performance of Fibers and Fabrics for Astronaut’s IVA Wardrobes for Long Duration Space Flight," was sponsored by Boeing/NASA. This study focused on evaluating the performance of clothing worn by astronauts on long-term missions in space. During her graduate research work, she applied laboratory data on the physical properties of clothing fabrics to provide a scientific basis for selecting crew apparel. Through her work, she has demonstrated an outstanding ability to understand the requirements of NASA for these clothing materials, and has provided a model that NASA can use for future wardrobe selection. This achievement will benefit an important aspect of NASA’s clothing needs for prolonged space flight.
May 2005, Lisa presented the results of her graduate research to a group of more than twenty scientists at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Her presentation was well-received by NASA personel and her research and presentation has reflected very favorably, not only on Lisa, but also on graduate research at North Carolina State University. Lisa’s thesis was co-chaired by Dr. Roger Barker, Textile Engineering, Chemistry, and Science Department (TECS) and Director of T-PACC, and Dr. Nancy Cassill, Textile and Apparel Technology and Management (TATM). Lisa is currently employed as a Sales Manager for VIETRI, Inc., In Hillsborough, North Carolina. Congratulations, Lisa!
