North Carolina State University’s Department of Textile and Apparel, Technology and Management was well represented at the International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA) 2005 Annual Meeting in Alexandria, Virginia last November. A number of faculty and students from the department participated in the conference by presenting research and exhibiting creative work during conference sessions.

A diverse body of research was presented by the students and professors from the College of Textiles including:

  • Evaluation of Complete Garment and Seamless Weft Knitting Technologies from a Fashion and Design Perspective. Presented by Professor Nancy Powell with Sandy Black, University of the Arts London

Students and professors also showed creative work in one of two juried exhibition venues at the conference. In the Lectra/ITAA Live Gallery Show, Dr. Cynthia L. Istook showed her piece entitled Flower Girl Dress.

In the Mounted Exhibit, undergraduate student Diana Razulis and doctoral student Wonseok Choi showed their design Unfolding Evolution, masters student Melissa M. Burchett showed Out of Bounds: Futuristic Tennis Fashion and Natural Science: Honeycombed and Pleated Nonwoven Apparel, and doctoral student JiHyun Bae exhibited A Seamless Woven Jacquard Shirt.

The ITAA is a professional association with a membership including scholars, educators, and students in the textile, apparel, and merchandising disciplines in higher education (for additional information, see itaaonline.org). The organization’s annual conference draws hundreds of scholars from around the globe each year. In addition to topic sessions and exhibitions, the five day conference included theme speakers, workshops for faculty, an artisan fair, a career fair for doctoral students, and poster sessions. Students and faculty heard presentations on a variety of different topics such as Aesthetics/Design/Product Development, Merchandising/Marketing/Retailing Management and Visual Promotion, Consumer Behavior, Historical/Cultural Aspects, Social Psychological Aspects, Textiles and Apparel Science/Industry, International Trade, and Professional Development.
