State of the Union of the Textile Industry in North Carolina:
Improving Global Market Competitiveness with Identification and Assistance of Core Competencies

Nancy L. Cassill, Professor
Textile and Apparel Technology and Management
NCSU College of Textiles

The North Carolina State University College of Textiles has been awarded a research project to study the textile industry in North Carolina, in order to identify opportunities for improving global competitiveness of North Carolina textile complex companies. Funding has been made available by monies allocated from the North Carolina Legislature, Division of Policy, Research and Strategic Planning.

The project will incorporate a “triage” study (government, industry, academe) to

  • increase global performance of North Carolina companies,
  • better serve North Carolina companies (via services from NC Department of Commerce and North Carolina State University’s College of Textiles), and
  • enhance North Carolina’s textile complex global competitiveness, by the use of services provided by the North Carolina Department of Commerce and NCSU’s College of Textiles.

The project’s Steering Committee, with members from industry, government, and academe, will play an integral role in guiding the project, and working closely with the project’s Principal Investigator, Dr. Nancy Cassill.

With the pervasiveness of textiles in North Carolina, the “textile industry” will be defined by all related activities used in the textile supply chain: Traditional manufacturing, PLUS retail, distribution, marketing and design, development activities, labeling/ticketing, testing services, e-commerce and other auxiliary industries. A searchable and sortable data base is being developed and will include information about North Carolina companies. In addition, in-depth interviews with North Carolina companies will take place Spring 2006. A final report, with recommendations and an implementation plans will be delivered to the North Carolina Legislature in June 2006.
