Preparing Students for Leadership Roles
North Carolina A&T State University and North Carolina State University

Dr. Jane Walker, Associate Profesor, North Carolina A & T University
April Wilson, Assistant Coordinator of Diversity Programs, NCSU College of Textiles Nancy Cassill, Professor, NCSU College of Textiles

A collaborative effort between North Carolina State University and North Carolina A&T State University funded by the United States Department of Agriculture is underway. The focus of the project is leadership development for undergraduate students enrolled in programs in textiles apparel management, merchandising and design, and food science/food safety at the two universities. The goal of the project is to establish a program that focuses on leadership training and mentoring.

The three-year project will provide students with opportunities to develop leadership abilities and establish mentoring relationships with industry leaders and/or university faculty through experiential learning. Much of the information will be available to students at the two universities via Blackboard. The web-based format will enable students (1) to work through various levels of leadership exercises, (2) receive immediate feedback on what they have learned, (3) explore leadership issues within industries, (4) explore research interests of faculty in textiles/apparel and food science/food safety, (5) access on-line databases of persons in business, industry and academia who wish to mentor students, (6) enable students to contact those mentors via e-mail, and (7) encourage students to work through web-based mentoring exercises. Finally, leadership seminars will be conducted and incorporated into the web-based materials. This is an innovative way for students and professionals to interface. The project is designed to purposefully and systematically expose and educate students about leadership and mentoring throughout their academic studies at the two universities in order to enhance students’ opportunities for future leadership roles.

Faculty in the School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences at A&T are spearheading the project in collaboration with faculty in the School of Technology at A&T and faculty in the College of Textiles and College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at NC State.
