“2006 AATS Fashion Expose”

Janza Bush, 2005-2006 President, African American Textile Society

April 21, 2006 marked one of NC State University’s and the College of Textiles’ biggest events of the spring semester, the Annual Fashion Expose’ sponsored by the African American Textile Society. This year’s show was held in the Atrium of the Textiles Building and grew significantly in the amount of student designers, attendees, faculty support, and also offered exciting advantages for all those involved.

A total of eleven undergraduate and graduate student designers from the college featured their original designs and competed for scholarships based on their class level. Designers included: Allison Bowles, Janza Bush, Lori Faison, Jonathan Gatlin, Emily Hanhan, Jamella Murray, Deirdra Nance, Elicia Riley, Sonali Shah, Cora Smith, and Carolina Wang. Cynthia Istook, Associate Professor for Textile and Apparel Technology and Management, allocated a total of $2,700 in scholarships funded by the American Apparel and Footwear Association. Fourteen scholarships and awards were presented overall including Best in Show and Audience Pick. First place winners in their respective class levels were Jamella Murray (Junior), Jonathan Gatlin (Senior) and a tie between Deirdra Nance and Cora Smith in the Graduate category.

Jamella Murray
“Harlem Nights”

Jonathan Gatlin

Cora Smith
“Era of Sophistication”

Deirdra Nance

Notable professionals within the textiles and fashion industry judged the designs and included multiple Tony-award winning costume designer William Ivey Long, and former Emilio Pucci designer Nancy Stolfo-Corti. A separate section during the show featured the colleges Non-Wovens Project which allowed the audience a chance to view advancements in fashion created from unconventional materials. Pre-show activities of the evening included a catered dinner which gave corporate sponsors, judges and students the opportunity to mix and mingle before shifting into the main event. Sponsors for the show included: Beleza of Cameron Village, College of Textiles Diversity Program, Jockey International, NC Textile Foundation, Tumbling Colors and UAB-Black Students Board.

The African American Textile Society thanks all that attended and assisted in this year’s production, making it by far the most successful and enriching Fashion Expose’. It was definitely a showcase of the colleges’ growth in the field of fashion, and also demonstrated how hard work and support from others pay off.
