The Institute of Textile Technology was founded in 1944
by textile industry leaders who saw a need for individual companies to
join forces in collective
support of education and applied research. Today, even more than in the
past, successful companies need highly trained and talented business
and technical leaders, a skilled workforce, information, and state-of-the-art
knowledge derived from ongoing research. In today’s global economy,
companies must create value. The purpose of the Institute of Textile Technology is to extend the capabilities of textile and related companies to perform state of the art applied research, product development, manufacturing innovation, and education utilizing the vast resources of North Carolina State University’s College of Textiles to maintain and improve competitiveness in a global economy. To fulfill this purpose, the Institute provides and facilitates: · member driven, applied research The Institute staff, working in concert with NCSU faculty, is committed to assist members and clients toward achieving: · global competitiveness Specific Benefits Extended to Members · Membership
in ITT/NCSU Textile and Material Research Consortium Institute Board of Trustees Approves New Associate Membership: In an effort to broaden the membership base of the Institute to include critical peripheral and supplier groups, the Board of Trustees has approved a new membership category, Associate Member. Associate Member companies are not primary textile manufacturers but are within the textile industry supply chain. To provide representation a “cluster” concept has been developed to include the following industry participants: machinery suppliers, dye and specialty chemical companies, and systems/software providers. Other clusters may be identified at a later date. Once a cluster reaches a membership of five (5) companies, they will be entitled to elect a representative to the Board of Trustees, the Technical Advisory Committee, and the Intellectual Property Committee. Sharing representation, and likewise the cost of full membership, will offer a voice to important, smaller members of the industry at an affordable dues level. Such an organization will benefit the Institute through significantly broader participation. IT3 Proprietary research is performed through the Institute’s wholly owned subsidiary, IT3. IT3 provides the opportunity for companies to sponsor advanced research and development projects without the overhead associated with their individually maintaining research staff and facilities. IT3’s profits are donated to the Institute of Textile Technology to support the ITT/NCSU Textile and Material Research Consortium and the ITT Textile Education Fund. While technical in nature, IT3 provides services that a client may need to maintain its competitive position in today’s global economic environment. IT3 services are provided in the following areas: · Textile Manufacturing Performance For more information on the benefits of Membership, please contact George Edmunds at gedmunds@itt.edu or by telephone at 919-513-0894. ITT FELLOWS PROGRAM The Institute of Textile Technology (Institute) Fellows Program offers outstanding educational opportunities for students desiring leadership roles in management, research, and manufacturing. The ITT Fellows Program provides full scholarships, competitive stipends, and unique opportunities to highly qualified graduate students accepted by the NC State University College of Textiles. ITT Fellowships are typically awarded to exceptional M.S. students with science, engineering, or business undergraduate degrees. Each year ITT Fellows at the Institute of Textile Technology conduct master thesis research not only in technical areas but in non-traditional areas as well. The Institute, now aligned with NC State University’s College of Textiles located on the Centennial Campus, provides an environment for ITT Fellows to accomplish more in-depth research. At NC State our Fellows have available all resources within the College of Textiles as well as other areas on the campus, e.g., engineering, design, business, and economics. ITT Fellows are able to tap into a wealth of other resources at NC State, including state-of-the-art facilities and a diverse, international faculty. Students benefit from the large network of industry contacts maintained by the Professors at the College of Textiles. ITT Fellows have a broader experience than the average graduate student because of NC State and the Institute working together. The requirements for Institute Fellows are greater than those of the typical NC State graduate student. First-year Institute students are required to take five classes per semester as opposed to the standard three. Students feel more prepared going into the workforce with the diversity of classes they are required to take. Institute students are also afforded the opportunity to improve their communication skills through the Friday Seminar class taught by Institute faculty and faculty from the NC State Speaking and Writing Program. With cost savings being realized by sharing resources and facilities with NC State, the Institute is able to financially support more research programs. The ITT Fellows are given opportunities other students at the College do not receive such as travel funds to conduct their research not only throughout the South’s textile and apparel manufacturing regions but also to Miami, New York, Hong Kong, and mainland China. Two of the ITT Fellows traveled to ITMA Asia last year. ITT Fellows develop a thorough understanding of textile manufacturing and general manufacturing principles. Their perspectives are broadened on issues such as globalization, market strategies, process engineering, and development of innovative materials. Their knowledge of critical leadership skills, supply-chain management, and problem-solving skills are enhanced through valuable contacts with industry leaders during the Institute’s bi-annual meetings. ITT Graduates have an exceptional record of obtaining employment in high-impact positions. Past ITT graduates hold key positions in numerous companies, such as Senior Research Engineer, Vice President of Manufacturing, and CEO. While the focus of the ITT Fellowship program is textiles, the skill-sets developed in this program lead to opportunities in many areas including materials research, manufacturing, global sourcing, strategic planning, and retail supply-chain management. For more information concerning the Fellows Program, please contact Patrice Hill at patriceh@itt.edu or Chris Moses at chrism@itt.edu or by telephone at 919-513-7704. The Institute of Textile Technology and North Carolina State University’s College of Textiles have joined forces to provide the world’s optimal platform for timely delivery of applied research, professional education and dissemination of information for today’s textile industry preparing for tomorrow. Together, these institutions offer industry support that is unrivaled anywhere in the world. |
