MBB application process (Electronic submission or mail to Alisa Hunt Lowery, NCSU College of Textiles, Box 8301. Raleigh , NC 27695):

  • Submit application online
  • Submit application fee ($200) - Waived for NCSU Six Sigma Alumni
  • Submit evidence of BB certification; certifying body (ASQ, NCSU, etc.); Table of Contents of all SS training for all programs other than NC State's.
  • Submit project(s) summaries used for certification
  • Submit professional resume (to include academic/professional/industry experience)

Module Requirements:

Each MBB candidate must complete at least five MBB training modules. Each module has three basic components:

1) training; 2) application; 3) teaching.

  • Complete classroom training and pass assessment
  • Demonstrate application of the training through project application in each training class
  • Develop an in-house training module using participant's example
  • Upon satisfactory completion of five modules, the participant will be able to apply for Master Black Belt certification. This involves an oral review with the intrsuction team of all activities within the participant's organization as a MBB and presentation of evidence of demonstrated leading/coaching of Black Belt/Green Belt projects while in the MBB program. This will include a summary of all activities in leading or consulting Six Sigma projects during the participant's MBB course of study.

Average Module Length: Average module length is 3-1/2 days and training classes are as follows: Tuesday-full day; Wednesday-full day; Thursday-full day; Friday-half-day. Case studies will be assigned and must be completed in the evenings; An in-class review session will be held on Thursday evening; The assessment will be given on Friday 8:00-10:00 a.m. and coaching (as needed) 10:00-12:00 noon.

Timeframe/Advisor: While there may be extenuating circumstances, completion of five modules must be within two-year period of completion of the first module. Each participant will be assigned an advisor, who will work with the participant to help select the five modules most closely related to the needs of the participant in his or her company.

Software: Most of our Master Black Belt modules are designed using the Minitab or JMP software.  Some of the courses may be designed using another software package that is preferred by the instructor.  If another software package is used, you will be provided either a free version or a free trial version of the software.  Our program does include options to purchase the software packages that are used, either Minitab 15, JMP 7.0 or both.

NEW for 2009 Courses - The software packages used (if any) for each individual course can now be found under the 'Software' heading in the course description pages.

Course Transfers: MBB candidates may transfer up to one (1) course for the MBB program.  Courses must be approved by NCSU before credit is given. Using transferred courses will disqualify participants of receiving the $2399 per module discount.
