COT Faculty visits Thailand

By: George Hodge, Ph.D.

January 2008 –Dr. George Hodge, Associate Professor at N.C. State University College of Textiles, was invited by the Thailand Textile Institute (http://www.thaitextile.org/eng/) to discuss textile supply chain management issues.  The Thailand Textiles Institute (THTI) provides certified testing services, trend analysis in textile fashion, developments in technical textile products, statistics about the industry, and education and training for the textile industry. THTI is located in Bangkok which has a population of around 9 million people which is similar to the population of the entire state of North Carolina. Many products sold in the US are made in Thailand. But, a visit to the six story Siam Paragon shopping mall in Bangkok (http://www.siamparagon.co.th/v3/index2.html) shows many familiar brands (Jimmy Choo, Coach, Armani, Gucci, Lamborghini, Maseriati) including the North Carolina based company, Thomasville Furniture.

Dr. Hodge also had the opportunity to visit knitting and apparel manufacturing companies located around Bangkok. Companies in Thailand are looking for opportunities to become a part of textile supply chains with the United States.
