| Perception of Blackness and the Formulation of a Blackness Index |
|
| Research Summary | |
| Historically, many color scientists have been interested in whiteness, and its perception. Several indices have been proposed to quantitate whiteness, and both white light and white objects have been studied in detail. Very little work has been done on black objects, however (and indeed, only a relatively small amount has been done on the perception of blackness in the absence of light). The goal of this project is to first determine an average hue preference for the "best black", and to then empirically determine a formula that will convert measured colorimetric data into a single number representing the blackness of the object. |
