Co-Director, Center for Research on Textile Protection and Comfort (TPACC) and Faculty Position in Personal Protective Science and Engineering, Department of Textile Engineering, Chemistry & Science, N.C. State University
The College of Textiles invites applications for the position of Co-Director of the Center for Research on Textile Protection and Comfort (TPACC). The successful candidate will be expected to lead and administer research and testing projects in TPACC while expanding industry and government funding support for Center activities. Candidates must have a distinguished record of senior level administration and accomplishments in leading and managing research and development in areas relevant to the Center's mission. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated success in multi-disciplinary research in personal protective technologies and full scale performance testing, to include chemical and biological protection and physiologically based protocols for evaluating the effects of protective clothing on human heat stress. Candidates must possess an earned PhD in an area of science or engineering relevant to these applications areas.
The successful candidate must be qualified for faculty appointment at the associate or full professor level in the Department of Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science (TECS). This position will be expected to contribute to development of new academic programs in personal protective science and engineering at North Carolina State University. The successful candidate must be able to lead research and educational programs that involve multi-disciplinary collaboration with faculty across North Carolina State University.
The successful candidate will be presented an exciting opportunity to advance and expand North Carolina State University's TPACC, a recognized world academic leader for research in protective textiles and performance assessment of protective materials and clothing. TPACC was awarded the first project by the Department of Homeland Security to develop a chemical/biological resistant firefighter suit. TPACC's involvement in the area of CBRN protection led the recent development of Man in Simulant Test (MIST) facility within the College. This research capability is the first of its kind at an academic institution in the U.S. In addition, the successful candidate will participate in the development of a new Professional Sciences Masters (PSM) in Performance and Protection Sciences which is currently being planned for 2013.
TPACC is aggressively building its established research portfolio across the spectrum of protective materials, clothing and equipment (PPE). The Center is expanding the scope of its research activities to ballistic protection, protective systems modeling and to studies of heat stress encountered in sports applications. TPACC has outstanding research facilities including controlled climatic chambers, as well as the PyroMan manikin fire test chamber and the new MIST facility, both unique among U.S. universities.
TPACC plans to increase the research and testing services provided to the protective and performance textiles complex, a growing and productive sector of the world economy. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in enabling TPACC administration and research and service programs to accomplish this important mission. A high priority will be placed on demonstrated success in PPE research involving collaboration among international organizations, industry and government and academic institutions. Experience with laboratory quality and financial management systems and with laboratory accreditation processes and with national and international standards will be considered in evaluating candidates for the position.
