(1981-1998). These projects include:
Program: Development of Practical and Comfortable Barrier Textile
Systems, supported by the National Textile Center.
Amount of Support (1992-95): $646,000
Scope: A serious limitation of existing barrier fabrics is that
they lack
acceptable comfort properties. State-of-the-art materials are generally
thick and stiff, often lacking the heat and/or moisture vapor transfer
rates
required for a wearer engaged in strenuous work. The ultimate objective
of this project is to gain a basic understanding of transport and
protection
mechanisms in textile barriers, combining a comfort emphasis with
protective performance to create a scientific basis for this expanding,
high
added value market.
Impact: This research has contributed to the fundamental understanding
of the relationship between the structure of barrier fabrics and
their ability
to resist penetration to blood-borne pathogens, aerosol and chemical
hazards. It is defining the balance between moisture vapor permeability
and barrier protection for a variety of environmental hazards.
This
program has contributed to the science of measuring chemical
permeation through semi-porous materials and
to the assessment of materials contribution to comfort and heat
stress at
the fabric and garment level.

Fabrics, supported by J.E. Morgan Knitting Mills.
Amount of Support (1994-95): $78,026
Scope: To investigate the effects of knit fabric construction
and fiber
content on properties that influence wear comfort, including liquid
water
absorbency and heat and moisture transfer.
Impact: Insights produced by this study help us understand the
interactions among fiber and constructional variables that influence
vapor
and liquid transfer processes influential in human comfort perception.
Continuation of this research will advance our understanding to
include
transient heat and vapor
Research Grants and Contracts (cont.)
transfer phenomena as well as fabric to garment translations on
cold
weather knit systems.
Program: Design, Fabrication and Testing of a Mechanical Stylus
Surface
Analyzer, supported by the James River Corporation.
Amount of Support (1991-93): $154,975
Scope: This research produced an instrument that provides a unique
characterization of the surface roughness of tissue materials.
Measurements made using this device have been shown to reliably
predict human perception of tissue softness.
Impact: We have been told by James River that this research is
their
most highly regarded university-sponsored program. Publications
resulting from this project resulted in numerous inquiries from
researchers
in the pulp and paper industries.
Program: Thermal Comfort of Aramid Fabrics for Protective Apparel,
supported by the DuPont company.
Amount of Support (1991-93): $113,785
Scope: To understand the relationship between the fiber and fabric
composition of aramid fabrics and heat and moisture transfer in
steady-state and transient conditions.
Impact: A basic understanding was gained concerning the fiber
and fabric
effects that are useful in designing aramid fabrics with improved
comfort
performance. A novel "sweating pulse" apparatus was developed
that
permits measurement of heat and moisture in the clothing microclimate
and between clothing layers. An analytical model was developed
which
successfully explains transient heat and moisture transfer through
multilayer fabric assemblies. This research was extended to study
the
correlation between instrument readings and subjective perception
of the
comfort of aramid workshirts.

uniform materials and their relationship to comfort performance
in the
field.
Impact: Factors of fiber and fabric were identified that contribute
to
transport of air, moisture vapor and wicking through candidate
materials.
The influence of fabric mechanical and surface properties on tactile
comfort of military fabrics was uncovered by this study.
Research Grants and Contracts (cont.)
Program: Developing Kawabata Procedures for Predicting the Softness
of Paper Towels, supported by the James River Corporation.
Amount of Support (1990-93): $130,338
Scope: To investigate the relationship between human softness response
and mechanical and surface properties.
